Food Review: Braseiro Restaurant At Joo Chiat | Steak With Free-Flow Fries & Salad From S$19.90

The Place I finally got the chance to try Braseiro Restaurant, a French steakhouse opened by a French chef and owner in Joo Chiat, which has been around for at least six years. It is a few doors down from Petit Pain, and occupies a corner 2-storey shophouse space. The ambience of Braseiro is cosy and casual, and exudes a certain charm for a neighbourhood restaurant.

I personally find the level two space more charming, as you get the nice burst of natural light through the window for some tables. There is also a hidden terrace on level two which is nice for an alfresco evening drink when the weather is cooler.

The Food Wallet friendly prices for steaks is probably the strongest USP for Braseiro. From S$19.90++, you get to enjoy 200g Ribeye Steak with free-flow french fries and salad. It almost sounds like Aston’s pricing, but the ambience and service are way better here. I started with some of the house pour wines, two glassed for S$18!

I went for the Special Combo For 2 Set (S$64.90 for 2 pax), a 3-course meal with a Fondue de Camembert (cheese fondue) to share, two choices of meats, served with free-flow homemade fries & fresh lettuce, followed by dessert to share. I wanted to give this set a try since it was my first visit.

The Fondue de Camembert comes with a few slices of baguette, and it is best to have it as soon as it is served since the cheese will solidify quickly. A pretty safe and light cheese to have even though I am not the biggest cheese lover. It spots a nice molten texture and great with the baguette.

For the meat options, you can go for the Ribeye Steak, Beef Skewers or Chicken. I went straight for the 200g Ribeye Steak where you have the option to add on for a bigger portion. The steak is pretty decent for the price honestly.

It is not the most marbled cut out there, but still cooked to a nice medium-rare and relatively succulent. There is also a strong black pepper taste as it is sprinkled over the beef.

When the menu says free-flow fries, it is really generous with it as it is served in a big bucket. The hand-cut fries are very fresh, soft and also very tasty. You can also request for chilli or mayonnaise to go along.

Dessert served during my visit was the Chocolate Lava Cake, which flowed well.

Rants It would be a plus if there are more starters to choose from, such as escargot or foie gras.

Will I Return Again? A charming slice of France in Joo Chiat. Braseiro seems relatively under the radar when it comes to steak frites in Singapore and that makes up part of its charm. Head here for a cosy and affordable steak meal, and the service is very hospitable too.
