Food Review: Yut Kee Restaurant At Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur | Old School Hainanese Coffeeshop Since 1928

The Place I wanted to check out local breakfast spots in KL when I was there over the weekend last September, and Yut Kee is one of those casual restaurants which I managed to check out. Yut Kee is a popular Hainanese coffee shop brand which has been around since 1928, currently run by the third generation. The space of Yut Kee is a modern looking coffee shop which has a deep layout from its entrance. It only moved to its current Jalan Kamunting location few years ago,

The Food Yut Kee is famous for its classic Hainanese dishes such as Hainanese Pork Chop and Kaya Toast. I managed to try the Kaya Toast which comes with a rich spread of homemade kaya and butter. I like the crispy and rectangular-shaped bread where the kaya is delicious. I am in love with the kaya spread in KL so far, after trying the version from Ho Kow as well.

The coffee is not to be missed as well, where the black Kopi had a robust flavour.

A visit here is also not complete without trying the Hainanese Pork Chop. It is not quite what we usually see in Singapore where the pork chop is thinly sliced and typically drizzled with curry. Instead, the version at Yuk Kee comes with a big chunk of pork chop lying in generous gravy sauce along with sides such as green peas, carrots and potatoes. The fried pork chop is relatively tender and is tasty, given that it soaks up the jus of the gravy.

There are also noodle selections on the menu where I also had the Beef Noodle Soup. Nothing too revolutionary here, just a regular but comforting bowl of beef noodles soup with various parts of the beef meat, including tendons.

Rants No air-conditioning in the coffeeshop which can prove to be quite warm in the day. Be prepared to wait as well during peak mealtimes.

Will I Return Again? Overall, head to Yut Kee for a traditional Hainanese-style meal if you are looking at somewhere near KLCC. There is typically a waiting crowd during lunch hour, though it moves relatively fast given the huge space.
