Food Scoops: Best Cafes And Bakeries To Check Out In Kuala Lumpur (KL) | For Good Coffee, Pastries & Brunch

Universal Bakehouse
One of the most popular bakeries in KL, Universal Bakehouse at Damansara Kim Petaling Jaya often spots long queues in the mornings for its freshly baked bread and pastries. The interior is not huge with just one long communal table and limited counter seats by the window, so you can imagine this is a hot spot for takeaways. The bakes options are aplenty, from their Plain Croissant to Cinnamon Roll to Carrot Cake, you really cannot go wrong with any. Tea and coffee options are also available.

Opened in 2020, Dou Dou Bake is an oasis in KL and probably one of the most gorgeous bakery cafe space in the city. The bakery cafe is nestled in a quiet corner of Petaling Jaya, where the garden-like entrance and minimalist industrial theme interior already made a grest first impression for me. I love the wide array of pastries displayed at the counter which makes it easy to decide what to have. Expect home-baked sourdough breads, croissants and other pastries, with the likes of Croque Madame, Kouign-Amann and Sourdough Croissant. A brunch menu is also available.

It is a spacious spot with a coffee bar counter along with tables in the café. Go for one of the wide selections of filter coffee, and there is a small selection of pastries to go along such as Ham & Cheese Jalapeño Croissant. I love the quiet ambience which makes it a zen space to enjoy good coffee. Service is excellent too.

Located in Taman Paramount, One Half is a gorgeous minimalist space which serves good filter coffee by award winning barista, along with a wide selection of pastries and bakes on display from Dou Dou Bake. Half the café space is also dedicated to lifestyle products, where the best seats are the counter seats around the coffee bar. There is also a lush outdoor seating area. One Half Roastery
Located in Petaling Jaya, One Half Roastery is led by three-time Malaysia Barista Champion (2016, 2018 & 2020) Keith Koay and it is a coffee shop for coffee lovers. The colour popping of its interior reminds me of summer, and it does not come across as too tacky, Grab the seats at the counter for a close interaction with the baristas, where the menu is a wide variety of various beans all over the world where mainly focuses on filter coffee.

Plump By Tao Bakes Cakes
If you love cakes, Plump is a must try. With outlets in Bangsar and TTDI, I visited the Bangsaer outlet which is quite inconspicuous as it is located on level two with no signage. Look out for Opus Bistro on ground level and head up the stairs beside it, you will find a cosy space to enjoy the delicious cakes on display at the counter. It is a good range to choose from, with signatures like the Cloudless Cake, a rich chocolate cake. I also recommend the Kaya Cake which has the right balance of Kaya flavour and buttery taste.
