Food Review: L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele Singapore | Neapolitan-Style Pizza From Italy Opens First Southeast Asia Outpost

The Place Located on level one of the new Mercure Icon Singapore City Centre, L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele Singapore, a longstanding pizza brand from Italy with over 150 years of history, just opened its first Southeast Asia outpost this month along the buzzing Club Street.

Founded in 1870 by Michele Condurro, L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele has been synonymous with Neapolitan pizza excellence. It is one of Naples’ oldest pizzeria and is the first pizzeria in Singapore to offer handcrafted pizza a ruota di carro which translates to wagon wheel pizza – a unique, classic Neapolitan-style pizza characterised by its extra thin and wide dough with a diameter larger than the plate beneath it.

The interior of the restaurant is contemporary chic and exudes a cosy vibe with mainly wooden brown furniture. It features a semi-open kitchen where you can get a glimpse of the specially imported oven from Italy.

The Food The menu is designed into starters, pizzas, pastas and desserts, with more than a dozen pizza flavours to choose from, including the brand’s classic options.

For a start, I had the Burrata alla Puttanesca (S$26), where the Burrata is from Puglia and is paired with a mix of Leccino olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and Cetara anchovies. I love the creamy texture and fresh flavour of the Burrata!

I also had the Gambero Rosso di Mazara (S$38) which comes with wild red Mediterranean shrimp that is dressed with a touch of extra virgin olive oil. Nothing too fancy in terms of flavours, where you get to taste the naturally sweet shrimps with the fresh greens.

The last starter I had was the Fritto di Mare (S$26) which is a basket of crisp calamari, prawns, Amalfi coast fin fish, and tender zucchini.

On to the highlight of the restaurant, there are two quintessential Neapolitan-style favourites for the pizza – the Margherita (S$28) featuring Agerola Fior di Latte and pecorino Romano DOP, an aged cheese made from sheep milk; as well as the Marinara (S$22) with tomato sauce, garlic and a sprinkle of oregano. You can enjoy both by opting for Marita (S$28) which is a combination of half Marinara and half Margherita.

The first pizza I tried was the Friarielli & Salsiccia (S$36) which comes with pecorino Romano DOP, Italian sausage and friarelli napoletani. The latter is quite a unique leafy Italian cruciferous vegetable also known as broccoli rabe, which has a slight bitterness and nuttiness taste.

Next up I had the Cetara (S$34) where the Cetara anchovies goes with pecorino Romano DOP, Leccino olives and capers in a creamy Agerola Fior di Latte and tomato base.

For a more new age flavour, go for the Truffle Porcini (S$40) which has a nice aromatic and balanced combination of truffle and mushrooms in a Parmigiano Reggiano base.

Of course, you can stick to the classic Margherita (S$28) which has no special toppings but good on its own if you fancy a lighter pizza option.

I must say overall, I really like the chewy and soft texture of the dough here.

Other than pizzas, there are also pasta options handmade with Martimucci semolina flour. I had the Orecchiette alla Positanese (S$34) where the tender ear-shaped orecchiette pasta is matched with Italian sausage, cherry tomatoes, creamy burrata, and a sprinkle of Parmigiano Reggiano.

For desserts, you can expect the likes of Cannoli (S$16) where the deep-fried crisp and tube-shaped shells are filled with a ricotta-based filling.

Rants The pizza comes in huge 15” plate and it might get a little squeezy on the table.

Will I Return Again? L’antica Pizzeria da Michele is a great addition to the Club Street dining scene if you are looking for a casual dining spot for pizzas. Ideally, I think it is best to head here with at least four diners since each pizza is huge and you get to try more flavours in a group setting.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
