Food Review: Lean & Rich Bakery At UE Square | Hip Bakery Cafe By Ex-Tartine Bakery Korean Oppa

The Place A new bakery cafe has not so quietly opened in UE Square. Meet the new Lean & Rich Bakery which is run by a Korean trainer baker who used to front Tartine Bakery in Seoul. Located on level one of UE Square opposite Dutch Colony Coffee Co., it was packed when I visited over the weekend. The interior of Lean & Rich Bakery is kept minimalist in a Nordic-style, denominated by a long row of built-in benches.

The kitchen takes up almost half of the indoor space.

For bigger groups, outdoor seats are also available.

The Food The menu is concise with lean offerings (sourdough mainly) and rich offerings (mainly pastries like plain croissants, pistachio pastry, etc).

I had their Plain (S$4.50) and Choco (S$5.50) croissants, and I love it. It is not overly buttery but the texture is very good. It comes in slightly rectangular shapes with nice distinct folds, a departure from the typical croissant shape. Paired it with a Long Black (S$4.50) coffee and it works well.

Rants My observation is that there are teething issues in the team where the service of the orders is not that seamless, yet. I overheard a couple of confusion over orders, including ours which was missing for awhile and we had to follow up with the staff. All is forgiven when we had a bite of the pastry.

Will I Return Again? Overall, Lean & Rich Bakery is a great addition to the bakery cafe scene in Singapore which is surprisingly quite undeveloped in my opinion, as compared to cities like London, Seoul or Copenhagen. The menu is simple, and it is good that there is specialisation in its initial opening rather than being overly ambitious from the start. I will be back for its croissants.
