Food Review: Yang Ming Seafood Kelong @ VivoCity | Spacious Kelong Theme Interior With Free Corkage

The Place Popular homegrown live seafood restaurant Yang Ming Seafood just opened at VivoCity, and it is the largest of their three outlets so far! I checked out their latest outlet Yang Ming Seafood Kelong @ VivoCity, which is also the brand’s first in-mall waterfront restaurant with a view of the sea, after its first in the old estate of Bishan and second in the industrial area of Ubi

My first impression is how big the space is. The interior of Yang Ming Seafood Kelong @ VivoCity takes on a kelong concept and seats up to 250 persons, with an in-house wine cellar with over 150 wine labels.

As part of the kelong concept, you can expect traditional palisade fishing traps – complete with wooden floorboards, walls and beams, accented with fishnets, tanks and barrels in the restaurant.

There is an ongoing promotion where you can make your reservations to enjoy offers of live seafood and wagyu beef dishes at 50% off on weekdays from 26 September to 31 October.

The Food An extensive range of seafood cooked in almost 100 ways with 73 styles of live seafood, 14 styles of fresh squid and fish, seven styles of dry seafood and more.

Other than Yang Ming’s signature dishes, there are also new store-exclusive dishes which include the likes of the Fragrant Crispy Rice Crab, Basil Sauce Live Prawns and Milky Sea Prawns, Braised Whole Tripe & Brisket, Dry Braised Pork Cubes, and Chicken Broth with Baby Cabbage.

One of the good things is that should you prefer to bring your own bottle, corkage is free for all dine-in guests.

For a start, I recommend the Chicken Broth with Baby Cabbage (S$88 per portion), a huge pot of whole chicken in a luscious broth. Simple, good and comforting dish to share for a group.

The Crab Stewed Bee Hoon (S$11 per 100g (Sri Lankan Crab)/S$10 per 100g (Indonesian Crab) is not too be missed too. I don’t fancy the crab so much, but the bee hoon is soaked in all the jus that it is so delicious with a moist texture.

The Dry Braised Pork Ribs (S$20/small) was not one of my favourite dishes here as I find it quite normal as compared to the others.

Instead, try the Braised Whole Tripe & Brisket (S$108 per portion) which is good to share for 6-8 pax. The tender beef comes with thick luscious brown sauce which is perfect with some white rice. Note of caution is that the brown sauce is slightly spicy.

The Minced Garlic Steamed Clam (S$35/500g) is predictably good with heaps of garlic.

The best part I like about the Fragrant Crispy Rice Crab (S$11 per 100g (Sri Lankan Crab)/S$10 per 100g (Indonesian Crab) is the crispy rice which are so addictive. This should be bottled up and sold separately as a snack!

The Basil Sauce Live Prawn (S$28/300g) comes with unique basil sauce which tastes a little like green curry to me.

Lastly, the Claypot Fried Dace Fish Kai Lan (S$18/small) is a good option to add on if you fancy some greens to try.

Rants Prices are higher than your typical Zichar in a coffeeshop for sure.

Will I Return Again? This is a good addition to VicoCity since the first two Yang Ming outlets are all located in the neighbourhood districts instead of a mall. It is a huge space and being air-conditioned, it is good for big groups if you are looking for a comfortable dining space for a local Zichar meal.
