Food Scoops: Dining Guide To New Bahru | Best Restaurants & Cafes To Check Out In This Hip Lifestyle Enclave

The most hyped-up food and lifestyle destination in Singapore has to go to New Bahru, a project by The Lo & Behold Group. Here are some of the best eats in this development of what used to be a primary school complex.

One Prawn & Co
A modern Asian seafood concept by Chef Gwyneth, who is also behind the Michelin Bib Gourmand Zhup Zhup in MacPherson. Chef Gwyneth used to hold stints in Burnt Ends and Forlino, where she has a passion for woodfired dishes and in particular, seafood.  The cuisine – Seafood, Woodfire & Dry-ageing. These are the elements that define One Prawn & Co’s menu where Chef Gwyneth fuses Eastern cuisines with Western cooking techniques. Don’t miss the Braised Sea Cucumber, Seasonal Uni, Scallion & Monkfish and Cashew Curry. [Read more here…]

Le Clos — Deli & Wine House
A gorgeous space which serves French comfort food curated to pair with wine with over 800 labels on the menu. The space of Le Clos is split into different sections – retail zone where you can pick up a good range of wines at online prices, a main dining area and an outdoor alfresco terrace area. Most of the small and large dishes are grilled in the Josper oven, and for mains you can expect the likes of Homemade Tagliatelle Spanner Crab & Bisque; and Morriseau Mussels, Vin Jaune Marnière & Homemade Fries. Dearborn @ New Bahru
Dearborn is not unfamiliar to those who have been a loyal follower of Chef Christopher Kong’s granolas when Dearborn was literally first born at Everton Park. The space of Dearborn @ New Bahru is not huge where there are limited outdoor seats where you get to bask in the morning sun. Expect a long queue on weekends, and we say go for the Smoked Cheddar and Chili Sauce Sourdough Toast and Seaweed Madeleine. Odem
A first of its kind contemporary Korean restaurant and craft Makkoli bar in Singapore, the ambience of Odem is casual yet chic, making it a great spot for both intimate dinners and group gatherings. The menu features modern interpretations of classic Korean dishes. One of the restaurant’s USP is the ability to pair their dishes with unique brews of Makkoli, offering an experience that goes beyond just food. This pairing showcases the complexity and versatility of the drink, enhancing the flavors of the dishes. [Read more here…]

Huevos
One of the most popular restaurants in New Bahru, possibly because it is casual Mexican food. We had the Baja Fish taco with crispy breaded fish and chipotle aioli; Birria Beef taco with beef short rib and brisket and cheese; Chorizo Pork Quesadillas (our top pick) with sour cream and onion salsa; and of course, Huevos Conpapas because potatoes fried with beef fat and topped with sunny side up egg is love! Portions are huge in general, be warned.

Bar Bon Funk
A buzzy neighbourhood cocktail bar Chef-Owner Keirin Buck, Bar Bon Funk is a good spot for pre or post-dinner drinks with an elegant yet cosy interior. The drinks menu is a mix of classic and seasonal cocktails coupled with an immersive Hi-Fi experience in a lively “living room” setting. There is also their produce-led food selection to complement the drinks.

Artichoke
The contemporary Middle Eastern restaurant does a concise weekend brunch menu, where we ordered every item from the five main categories – Scramble Plate, Sandwiches, Hummus Plate, Cauliflower Mujadara and Shakshuka. Head indoors for the buzzy, dim dining vibes and the air-conditioned seats, else you can opt for the vibrant outdoorsy seats if you feel cool.

One Fattened Calf Burgers
The brand’s second outlet is located in New Bahru in a spacious interior with green tiles and neon logos. Expect long wooden communal tables in an upscale fast-food setting. The signature is their OFC Cheeseburger (S$16.50) which features a 150g New Zealand premium grass-fed beef patty, cheddar cheese, charred onions, red onions, house-made crisp pickles, and the OFC special sauce. Comparatively, I very much prefer the OFC Goldburger (S$19.50) which also has the same 150g beef patty along with their house-special pulled beef brisket, cheddar cheese, onions, pickles, and special sauce. Combos are available for an additional $5.50, which include a side of thick-cut fries and a drink. Overall, the burgers are juicy, delicious and worth a try.

Ordering and payment are done via QR code, and the menu is a diverse mix of specialty coffee, brunch fares like Big Breakfast and Avocado & Eggs on Toast along with a range of cakes and pastries to complement your coffee.
