Food Review: Tan Ser Seng Herbs Restaurant At Geylang | Herbal Broth Specialty Brand Since 1946
The Place Located in a coffeeshop in Geylang, Tan Ser Seng Herbs Restaurant has been around for over 70 years since 1946 and it was only my first time to try their food recently. A brief history about the brand – it was established in 1946 by Tan Ah Sai, Tan Ser Seng Herbs (Turtle) Restaurant began as a modest street stall along Orchard Road, serving turtle soup crafted from a traditional recipe brought from China.

Today, the space is a spacious coffeeshop setting where the brand is known for their herbal soups, particularly Claypot Turtle Soup.

The Food Other than turtle soup, there are also other herbal broths such as Ginseng Black Chicken Soup, Collagen Fish Maw Soup and Cordyceps Chicken Soup.
I started with the signature Claypot Turtle Soup (S$28/small) which has a nice balance of herbal taste. Some health properties of this is that it is rich in collagen and antioxidants. You also get a complimentary refill of the turtle soup (why not) for one time.

I also enjoyed the Ginseng Black Chicken Soup (S$15) which is simmered with over 20 herbs. The flavour of the soup is rich, and you also get good protein from the tender chicken meat. The ginseng taste is also not too overpowering.

There is also the Cordyceps Chicken Soup (S$15) which is renowned for supporting lung health and boosting energy levels. I prefer the ginseng black chicken more than this as the former has a richer flavour.

Some side dishes to go with the soup include the likes of Handmade Prawn Roll (S$12), Jade Tofu with Pickles (S$10), and Yam Rice (S$1.60) with mushrooms and crispy shallots.

You also can’t go wrong with the Aged Preserved Radish Omelette (S$10).

Rants Lack of air-conditioning in the coffee shop setting. The prices of the soup for the smallest portion are on the higher side compared to other more commercialise herbal soup chain brands.
Will I Return Again? An easy and fuss-free meal if you are looking for something comforting for the stomach. The choice of side dishes on the menu goes well with the herbal soups and rice, and it is ideal to head here with a small group if you want to try more variety of dishes.
