Food Review: Richman Dim Sum At Ubi Crescent | Affordable Dim Sum By Ex-Hotel Chef
The Place A new dim sum eatery opened in Ubi recently and it is tucked away in the same coffeeshop as Yang Ming Seafood, Richman Dim Sum. Founded by Chef Foo Wah Keng with 30 years of experience under his belt, in collaboration with his kampung buddy Chef Kok Let Chin, Richman Dim Sum (大富豪港式点心茶楼) offers affordable dim sum from just S$2.90.

Chef Foo used to work in various hotels and restaurants like Crystal Jade, and Richman Dim Sum serves up a wide variety of dim sum created with contemporary touches and is opened from morning to late afternoon.

The Food Yes, dim sum from S$2.90. Choose from chef’s signatures to steamed and fried dim sum selections.

For a start, I had their Crispy Popiah Rice Rolls (S$6.8) is a twist on the popular Cantonese dish ‘zha leung’ where the smooth rice rolls is wrapped with crispy popiah skin, which is a Nanyang-style touch. The fillings are a mix of ‘hae bee’ (dried shrimp) and ‘cai po’ (preserved radish) which is quite good.

I also like the Beetroot & Rice Crisps Rice Rolls (S$7.8) which features the same thinly cut rice rolls which are freshly prepared.

It is always nice to have congee for dim sum and the Cantonese Dried Vegetables & Salted Pork Porridge (S$3.8) is a simple and homely rendition inspired by the family kitchens of Guangzhou. The congee here is cooked with pearl rice, and flavoured with preserved vegetables and salted meat. I enjoyed the smooth texture of the porridge and the preserved vegetables.
For something fried, the crisp Fresh Shrimp Crispy Beancurd Rolls (S$4.8) couldn’t go very wrong.

There are also many variations of ‘siew mai’ and I had the Mentaiko Shrimp Dumplings (S$6.8) which is topped with creamy Mentaiko sauce.

The Baked Roasted Duck Bun (S$6.8) here is different in the sense it is not filled with pork, but duck meat. That said, it is quite average for me as the texture of the crust is not as good as other versions.

For buns, the Charcoal Char Siew Buns (S$5.8) and Pandan Salted Egg Yolk Custard Buns (S$5.8) are decent options to try.

A cute item on the menu is the Crispy Mushroom Snails (S$5.8) which has mushrooms fillings and a chewy almost mochi-like texture. Unfortunately, it was way too oily for me, and the texture was not as crispy as it should be.

Finally, the Brown Sugar Caramel “Ma Lai” Cake (S$4.8) is quite dense in texture (I prefer something lighter) where the flavour of the brown sugar caramel is quite mild.

Rants Some hits and misses from what I had. The price range of the dim sum items is also quite big even though it is from S$2.9.
Will I Return Again? Richman Dim Sum suits a morning family meal if you are not fond of paying restaurant prices for dim sum. The rice rolls are the best for me as compared to the other items I tried.
