Food Review: Kemuri At Cuppage Plaza | From Yakitori To Kappo-Style Japanese Restaurant

The Place Located at Cuppage Plaza, Kemuri was previously a Japanese yakitori-focused concept which has now transformed into a kappo-style concept since July 2025. It is still the same intimate space with 11 counter seats and two private tables. The counter seats are best if you like a front-row view of live-fire cooking. The restaurant is now helmed by Head Chef Yuki Saito, previously Sous-Chef at Michelin-starred Kaiseki Komuro in Tokyo with a focus on charcoal-grilled dishes and kappo-style cuisine.

The Food Only ala carte menu is available, and one highlight is also their beverage program which features over 50 sakes, seasonal pairing flights, shochu, and premium Japanese whiskies. After hours, Kemuri transforms into a members-only Late Dining Bar, accessible by referral only.

For a start, I had the Thin Somen-style Grated Yam (S$12), a cold appetiser which is somewhat refreshing.

Other starters I had include the Roasted Duck Breast (S$9) and Straw-Smoked Bonito (S$16) where the latter spots a nice smokiness flavour.

You can’t go wrong with the Otoro Sashimi (S$16) which is fatty and fresh.

For seafood lovers, the Jumbo Prawn (S$13) spots a juicy and fresh texture as it is just lightly seasoned with sprinkles of salt.

There is a good variety of chicken meats on the menu, and I tried their Slow-cooked Chicken Thigh (S$14) which is juicy and well-marinated.

One of chef’s signatures here is the big Grilled Whole Kinki Fish (S$79) where the fish is seasoned with salt and grilled over charcoal. The fish meat is fresh and sweet.

For carbs, I highly recommend the Salmon Belly and Ikura Claypot Rice (S$40) which is a good portion to share for 3-4 pax. I love the aromatic rice which spots a moist texture, as well as the fatty and delicious salmon belly.

Dessert is a simple Homemade Panna Cotta (S$10) to conclude the meal.

Rants A complete change in brand identity can be confusing for diners.

Will I Return Again? There is no longer yakitori at Kemuri which some regulars might take time to get used to. Otherwise, it is a good shift that the menu has pivoted towards ala carte which allows for more flexibility in terms of ordering. The prices of the well-varied dishes on the menu are also fairly accessible.
