Food Review: Sophia At The St. Regis Singapore | Modern Italian Dining Restaurant

The Place Previously The Astor Grill, the newest dining concept at The St. Regis Singapore is Sophia, a new restaurant concept for modern Italian dining. The interior of Sophia takes on an elegant and contemporary interior and is a nice departure from the hotel’s good old days of Brasserie Les Saveurs.

I like the high ceiling of the space, and the dining arrangements are such that you get ample space and privacy without being too close to other diners. The other dining concepts in the property includes Yan Ting, The Tearoom and The St Regis Bar.

The Food It is an extensive menu and the flavours at Sophia are inspired from across 11 regions of Italy by Chef de Cuisine Angelo Sergio. Apart from its extensive a la carte menu, two and three-course set lunch menus start from S$42++ and S$58++ respectively from Mondays to Saturday. For beverages, the wine list spans across 70 artisanal labels across Italy.

First things first, complimentary bread was served.

My meal started with the antipasti of Vitello Tonnato (S$28) which showcases veal eye-of-round with tuna mayonnaise sauce and caper berries. It is a light and creamy texture for the veal, very appetising.

The other starter I had was the Polpo Grigliato (S$32) where you get smoky grilled octopus over a bed of fava beans with sweet Tropea onions, mint, lemon zest and semi-dried tomatoes.

For pasta, I went for the Spaghetti All’astice (S$118) which is great if you like seafood. It is pricier than other pastas on the menu, but you get a whole Boston lobster with cherry tomato, lobster jus and basil. I must say the spaghetti is al dente to my liking and the thick chunks of lobster meat is very fresh and tender.

For protein, I went for the Taglita Di Manzo  – grilled striploin, arugula, parmigiano reggiano, balsamic vinegar – where I had the Robbin Island Wagyu MB9+ (S$138). As expected, my medium-rare beef turned out to be succulent and it tastes good even without any condiments.

For desserts, the Baba Napoletano (S$16) here is soaked in limoncello syrup with Chantilly cream, and strawberry compote. The portion is quite big and it leans towards the sweeter side with the limoncello syrup.

Comparatively, I enjoyed the Salame Di Cioccolato (S$16) more than the Baba Napoletano, which is prepared and served tableside. It is sliced perfectly where the chocolate, pistachio & biscotti “salami” is accompanied by blood orange pâte de fruit prepared and served tableside.

You get a nice balance of the chocolate and pistachio flavours in the cookie here.

Rants Nothing in particular.

Will I Return Again? Overall, I had a pleasant meal at Sophia where the flavours of the dishes I had above are generally quite on point. It is a nice dining ambience which is great for date nights or an intimate group dining.
