Food Review: Patchwork Kitchen At South Bridge Road | East-Asian Flavours In A Hidden Spot With City Views

The Place A rather new secret dining spot in Singapore, I checked out Patchwork Kitchen, a new contemporary East-Asian bistro at 42 South Bridge Road. The restaurant is located on level five, in the same building as South Bridge Reserve, an invite-only members’ club curated for Burgundy lovers. The space of Patchwork Kitchen is casual, and it overlooks Marina Bay’s skyscape.

The Food The cuisine here blends East-Asian flavours with approachable bistro formats, available for lunch and dinner. The drinks menu is a curated wine selection that includes Asian wines and Asian winemakers with a relaxed drinking culture such as cocktails in a can.

I managed to try some of their appetizers in bite-sized portions such as the Smoked Sardine Toast (S$19) with onion relish, gochujang butter, chives; Bacon Cheese Tart (S$16) with bacon onion jam, comte, black pepper; Chicken Rice Arancini (S$9) with pickled cucumber, chili gel; and the Crudite w/ Whipped Cod’s Roe (S$13) with assorted vegetables, lemon oil and furikake.

It is a pretty diverse mix of flavours and influences to say the least.

Moving on to the Laksa Tortelloni (S$21), it is a Singaporean version of pasta where the laksa broth is easy to drink and resonate. Kitchen made prawn paste for the broth and it is topped with an onsen egg.

For protein, I had The Pork Katsu (S$25) served with sweet potato puree and kimchi-tomato sauce. This Japanese inspired pork katsu blends with a Korean kimchi sauce.

I also tried the namesake Patchwork Chicken (S$21) which features grilled boneless thigh, napa cabbage and gochugaru. A relatively safe dish where I thought that the condiments for the otherwise tender chicken could be more punchy.

For desserts, expect the likes of Miso Caramel Tart (S$9) with gelato and PWK Mango Pomelo (S$9) with mango panna cotta and coconut milk shaved ice. I am not too big a dessert person so these two items are fairly neutral for me.

Rants It is hard to put an identity to the concept whenever it is a generic flavour profile for me.

Will I Return Again? Part of Patchwork Kitchen’s charm lies in the fact that it is a pretty hidden spot if you are finding a quiet spot for a meal in the heart of town. Prices are fairly accessible too with mains below S$30, and they do have interesting drinks like cocktails in a can to complement the food.
