Food Review: Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant

The Place Located at the basement of Raffles City Shopping Centre is Watami restaurant, a Japanese casual dining eatery which offers set menus at reasonable prices. I was recommended by my friend who is all praise for the food here and I was really excited when I peruse the menu. The interior of Watami is quite cosy and spacious, conducive for having a long chat with your family or friends over a meal. I had a 3 hour long dinner at Watami and I am giving the service staff a thumbs up as they have been very attentive throughout the course of my dinner.

The Food I was all ready to have the set dinner for 2 as I have heard rave reviews about it prior to coming. There is a wide selection in the set which I was very pleased to see. Basically some of the items are fixed such as the Caesar Salad, Salmon Sashimi and Tofu on hot pan. In addition, we are given the selection for the main dish, hot pot, an additional item, a side dish and 2 drinks. That is a long list, pretty value for money in my opinion.

Caesar Salad – Very fresh greens coupled with a raw egg which mixes well with the salad. The crumbs is my favourite part of the salad.

Tofu on hot pan – Mini tofu cubes which serves as good appetisers.

Salmon Sashimi – Fresh salmon sashimi is always welcoming.

Main dish selection: Salmon and flying fish roe with rice in Stone pot

This is totally awesome as we get to “fry” our rice in the hot stone pot the moment it arrives. The result is a fragrant salmon belly rice which is so tasty that I cannot stop eating it. Highly recommended as the main dish choice.

Hot Pot selection: Beef Sukiyaki

As part of the set meal, I would say that Watami is very generous with their ingredients for the Beef Sukiyaki which we have chosen for our hot pot. The beef is fresh and the serving is more than sufficient for 2 people. There is also an egg included which adds more flavour to the Sukiyaki. Kudos to the service staff for their initiative to add more soup for us and their attentive reminder not to overcook the Sukiyaki which will result in an over-salty soup.

Additional item with the Hot Pot: Udon

Udon is average in my opinion. It is meant to compliment the hot pot, which we have added it into the Beef Sukiyaki above or else it is too bland to be taken on its own.

Side Dish: Mentai Potato Pizza

The Mentai Potato Pizza is topped with Cod roe, Pork bacon and Potato. This is probably my favourite dish for the whole set meal. I love the thinness of the pizza. The cod roe has given the pizza such a good flavour that this is definitely a must try in Watami.

Will I return again? No doubt – this is a perfect place for casual dining with value for money set that is of good quality.

Nice review! May I know how much is the set for 2 person? My friend’s birthday is coming up, looking around for a nice place to eat.

    • Hi Shareen,

The set is about $59++, which is more than enough for 2! If you don’t have a huge appetite, it will be quite challenging to finish for 2 pax. Enjoy!
