Food Review: SPR MRKT at Mccallum Street | Cosy cafe in the heart of CBD

The Place Think of the CBD in Singapore and the first thing that comes to my mind are the skyscrapers. Little did I expect the surge of new restaurants and cafes in this district over the past one year, especially along Telok Ayer Street near Amoy Food Centre, as well as the adjacent Mccallum Street. The Market Grill, Sophie Bakery and SPR MRKT are a few prominent names to spring up in this area lately, and I finally had the chance to check out SPR MRKT one fine weekend.

Supermarket without the vowels equals SPR MRKT, I love the creativity in the name. The concept is quite refreshing as well – Food, Retail and Art seems to blend all of life’s finest into a one stop shop.

The one retail rack which I was drawn to is the Cider selection, boasting imports from New Zealand and Australia. Other than beer and cider, kitchen ware is also part of the retail sales here at SPR MRKT.

The Food
If there is one thing about SPR MRKT which is unpredictable, it has to be the food menu. It changes everyday, so do check out the website or call beforehand to find out the menu for the day. For the mains, it might well be Aglio Olio for a day, and Lasagne another day.

The All Day Breakfast menu does not change though, which is exactly what we had on a Saturday. Expect the usuals such as English Breakfast, Eggs Benedict and Sausages & Mash.

My perfect way to start a weekend is coffee. Depending on preference, the Iced Mocha ($6.50) or Hot Mocha (6) are both surprisingly good, given that this is not a specialty coffee cafe. The coffee is strong enough to perk me up for the rest of my day.

The Curly Fries with Sour Cream ($7) is very addictive, thinly cut and very crispy. Love the sour cream sauce as well.

For the brunch, we decided to go with the Sausages & Mash ($16), which comes with two types of sausages to choose from – Herb & garlic beef or korubuta pork. The portions are generous, sausages and mashed potatoes are tasty as well.

Rants
SPR MRKT is sadly not opened on Sunday and it closes pretty early on Saturday at 4pm. If only opening hours on Saturday could be extended beyond 6pm.

Will I Return Again? I want to try the pasta here at SPR MRKT next! That aside, I like the vibe and concept of this place, which makes me feel like coming back for more.
