Food Review: The Wicked Garlic
The Place This is not a restaurant but a stall in a coffee shop in Serangoon Gardens. Welcome to The Wicked Garlic, an Italian specialty stall in this matured food estate, just few steps from Borshch Steakhouse. The general impression of good Italian food is that it must be pricey, but what I find admirable about The Wicked Garlic is that it aims to bring quality Italian food to customers at wallet friendly prices. Hooray to that!

The Food The focus of the menu is no doubt Italian fare, which include the likes of Pizza, Pasta and Risottos, which range from between $4.70 to $17.70. I heard rave reviews about the Grilled Large Prawns in Curried Risotto ($16.70) prior to my visit, which naturally makes it top on my to-order list.
I can only sum it up in one word: Awesome! I totally heart the curry Risotto, which we requested for it to be less spicy and the spiciness is indeed just right for our palate. The Risotto has a rich and creamy taste, which I totally love, not to mention the fact that the moisture of the rice is perfect as well. As for the grilled flame torched prawns, it is damn fresh! Of course, the fact that it is grilled makes it much more delectable. The owner chatted with us and revealed that this is the Nth version of the curried Risotto after numerous feedbacks from customers.
theRantingPanda thoughts: We can only say it is close to perfect.
We also tried the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara ($7.70), which comes with an egg yolk in the middle. I always think Carbonara is a very safe choice when it comes to Italian food and it rarely goes wrong. This version did not disappoint as expected, if creamy and cheesy pasta is your preference. I think it is creamy enough yet not too over the top. The egg yolk is also a good compliment to the dish.
Rants The fact that it is in a non-airconditioned coffee shop can be a turn off on hot days. That said, it is meant to sell affordable Italian food so we can’t complain too much. As for payment mode, only cash is acceptable at the moment.
Will I Return Again? The Grilled Large Prawns in Curried Risotto totally blew us away. This must have been one of the better Italian food in town. We are not kidding, and will be back to try the Pizza next time and the curried Risotto again.
