Food Review: Jamie’s Italian | Celebrity chef’s arrival in Singapore

The Place No one hasn’t heard of Jamie Oliver, which explains the craze in Singapore over the debut opening of the celebrity chef’s Jamie’s Italian in Vivocity. It has been about a month since the opening, but the queue and waiting time is still approximately 90 minutes during peak dining hours. Is the wait worthwhile? Read on to find out.
IMG_1594The Food Jamie’s Italian prides itself as serving fresh, affordable pasta to the mass public. While this idea is definitely welcoming, my overall experience is disappointing.
IMG_1598 IMG_1593For a start, we had the Baked Mushrooms ($12.50), which comes served in a hot pan. The dish is quite unique, with the baked mushrooms on crispy crust. I love mushrooms, but this version comes off as a little too bland and dry.
IMG_1599Rumour has it that the Risotto and Ravioli are the better dishes here, which led me to try both dishes. Each dish has two sizes, small or large. I will recommend the large if you have a heavy appetite, otherwise it is a good idea to order the small servings and try a greater variety of dishes.

The Wild Mushroom Ravioli ($16 for small/$24.50 for large) is served in mushroom and tomato sauce. While I can taste that the ravioli is freshly made, I am not in awe of the dish. The fresh ingredients does not necessarily make a dish outstanding, and this is sadly the case here. I find it bland, while the wild mushrooms does not make me go wild or wow.
IMG_1607At this juncture, we no longer have much expectations for our last dish, the Wild Truffle Risotto ($16 for small/$24.50 for large). Indeed, it surely did not fail our “expectations”. The truffle taste is lacking, and the risotto is also not buttery enough. Trust me, The Wicked Garlic’s risotto is so much better.
IMG_1618Rants To be honest, I think a lot of Italian restaurants in Singapore such as Amici serves better Italian food. The ingredients may be fresh at Jamie’s Italian but the overall standard of the food is nothing to shout about.

Will I return again? The glory of celebrity chef’s restaurants can be a bane or boon. A celebrity chef restaurant or not, how the food turns out is still our strong reason to return or stay away. tRP is not impressed, so it is a boo for us.
