Food Review: Ah Loy Thai | Cheap Thai food in Shaw Towers

The Place Mention good and affordable Thai food in Singapore and Ah Roy Thai is bound to come across my mind. This gem in Shaw Towers has been around for years but its popularity among foodies certainly did not wane with time. The restaurant is constantly packed during peak meal hours so my advice is to arrive before the peak hours.

Updated as of 2017: Ah Loy Thai’s original branch at Shaw Towers has closed. New address along Tan Quee Lan Street (Bugis) updated below.

The Food The menu is a simple one page where you fill up the form by ticking the dishes. Expect the usual Thai fares such as Phad Thai, Tom Yum Soup (Seafood/Fish/Prawns/Chicken), Green Curry Chicken and Pineapple Rice. The prices are fairly reasonable, with dishes averaging between $9-15. As compared to the equally if not more popular Nakhon Kitchen, it is relatively more expensive.

Thai Ice Tea ($2.20) – The sweetness is alright, but it would be better if it is much thicker.

Tom Yam Fish Soup ($8.50) – We requested for less spicy but it turned out to still be quite spicy. This dish might not be suitable for people with very low spiciness threshold. That aside, the fish is really fresh and the soup is very tasty as well.

Phad Thai ($7) – This is inevitably my favourite dish at Ah Loy. The Phad Thai taste is uniformly good and it helps that it is not too greasy. The serving is quite generous, recommended for sharing for 2 people.

The Fried Calamari with butter (8.90) is damn addictive that I cannot stop popping it. It is crunchy and simply heavenly with the tinge of butter smeared over the rings.

Rants Service is sloppy, especially when one of the staff almost spilled our Thai Ice Tea. The space is quite small, especially when I constantly feel that the staff is brushing against my back while they walk behind me.

Will I return again? I like the food, which is always my primary reason for returning to a restaurant again. This is a decent Thai restaurant for some comfort Thai food.
