Food Review: Maison Ikkoku
The Place Located just steps away from Dong Po Colonial Café, Maison Ikkoku needs no introduction since it is already so well-known among foodies and bunchies. It has been around for years apparently, but I only have the chance to check out this café recently. It is a fairly small café with overwhelming crowd on weekends, which I will definitely encourage to make reservations or risk being turned away.
The Food The brunch choices here is probably one of the widest options, ranging from the famous Hangover Omelette ($16) to French Toast with berries ($16) and needless to say the ubiquitous Signature Eggs Benedict ($22).
My café Latte ($5) is always a good start to my brunch, although I find that this version lacks a strong body and taste. The latte art is nevertheless heart throbbing.
I tried the Smoked Salmon Scrambled ($18) which consists of Norwegian smoked salmon as well as the home made Guacamole, which is interestingly Mexican styled avocado based sauce some sort like a salad ingredient as sides. The multigrain bread is huge, as well as the scrambled eggs serving. I thought the scrambled eggs are at most fairly decently done, as in it did not wow me a great deal.
The other popular option is the Hangover Omelette ($18) for the eggs crazed lovers, which comes with potato wedges, sourdough, honey baked ham and Portobello mushrooms. Definitely worth ordering much more than the Smoked Salmon Scrambled in terms of variety and value for money.
Rants The café is not new, so expect aging furniture and ambience of the place. The congested café also makes the dining less pleasant, especially with the pressure of giving up your seat once you are done eating due to the constant queue at the entrance.
Will I return again? With so many new cafes opening, there is no lack of options and I am likely to give this place a miss. A café I want to return have to at least make me feel comfortable while dining and this is definitely not one of those.
