Food Review: Dong Po Colonial Cafe | Old-school treats along Kandahar Street
The Place For an old taste of early Singapore, Dong Po Colonial Cafe attempts to go the retro way. Located along Kandahar Street (near to Haji Lane), this area feels like it is still stuck in the era of 1950s with the old shop houses and five foot alleys.
Stepping into the cafe does give me the retro feel, especially with the old photographs, bicycle and kitchen ware.
The Food Dong Po attempts to replicate the olden western pastries of Singapore during the 1950s and 60s and indeed, I do not find any of the pastries and cakes familiar looking.
I skipped the sweet pastries and headed for the standard Kaya Toast set ($4.50). The coffee is quite thick but the toast does not feel any different from other toast shops.
Rants While the retro theme may go well with the older folks and aspiring time travelers, the selection of the pastries and desserts may not resonate with the younger crowd.
Will I return again? It may be worthwhile for tRP to give the pastries a try the next time round. We have to be prepared for the sugar overdose though.
