The Place Retro is back, again. This ex-medical hall along Telok Ayer has been revamped into one of latest hip cafe in Singapore. Retaining the original shophouse structure and signages, My Awesome Cafe adopted an industrial look to the cafe – picture this as metal stools with wooden top, metallic silver wall-mounted fans, cement-colours floor and walls & of course the exposed electrical wires powering the randomly placed lightbulbs.Does this remind you of Chye Seng Huat? Someone say copycat!

This new hunt is attracting lots of interest now, and you may need to wait for a seat in the rather fast-paced cafe. In our short one hour spent at Awesome, we saw (only) 1 happy waitress, 2 groups ahead of us in the queue, 3 times glassed cups and plates smashing its way onto the floor and at least 4 unhappy customers asking for their food to be served. Just to summarize what we meant by fast-paced.

The Food Arrived at Awesome after a heavy lunch so decided to skip the food and went straight to the coffee – which shockingly disappoint.

The Iced Mocha ($5) was a flop. Had chosen that on a hot Sunday afternoon (read 35°C) and a late night before, hoping to down something cold with caffeine. The drink turned out diluted, bland and with brown solid powder at the bottom of the iced cold drink. Epic fail.

Well, I must say the Latte (S$5++) was ok.

Rants Taken a look at their facebook account, cafe website and initial reviews of the cafe, I saw the words Local, Awesome and Vintage on a repeat mode. I must say, there’s just so little local flavour in it other than the hardwares, nothing awesome other than the cafe name itself, nothing vintage other than the shophouse. Have My Awesome Cafe tried too hard to be awesome that it lost its way to Awesomeness?

Will I return again? No chance. Contrary to their proclamation on their webpage, this Awesome Cafe was not serving much awesomeness. Chill-lax it was not.
