The Place Roti prata is one of the most representative hawker snack in Singapore, though I profess that it’s not an everyday indulgence for me given how much I have to work out to earn back those calories. Despite so, that doesn’t stop me from making a pilgrimage to Mr and Mrs Mohgan’s Super Crispy Roti Prata along Crane Road, nestled in a coffee shop amidst the landed estate in Joo Chiat.
The Food The prata is made from scratch by Mr Mohgan himself, which is probably why they need two days of rest each week (closed on Tuesdays and Wednesday), opening early morning and usually sold out for the day by about 1pm or earlier. Do expect a constant stream of crowd at this popular prata shop, we waited about thirty minutes for our pratas. Make your order to Mrs Mohgan, then check back periodically if your orders are ready. Payment is usually made after you finish eating.
This is not the place to come if you want a variety like Murtabak or Paper Prata. Choose from the standard Kosong Prata, Cheese Prata, Egg Prata, Onion Prata or Mushroom Prata. We had a few Kosong, Egg and Mushroom and I daresay just go for the Kosong Prata if you only have space for one. It was the most crispy of the lot, while the other flavours were significantly less so. I somehow just enjoy prata on its own, without any further additions like egg or mushroom.
Rants It’s a pity the stall doesn’t make its own Teh Tarik, which will make such a great pairing with the pratas. For drivers, parking may be challenging given the limited parking lots in the vicinity.
Will I Return Again? This stall for sure has one of the best kosong prata around in Singapore. At such a reasonable price in exchange for a whale of satisfaction, needless to say there is no reason not to be back.
