Food Review: Hua Ting Steamboat at Claymore Connect | Hotpot concept with eight soup base choices

The Place The hotpot scene has been sizzling with hot competition these few years, with the one of the latest player being Hua Ting Steamboat, located in the new Claymore Connect mall (former Orchard Hotel Shopping Arcade). Not to be confused with Hua Ting restaurant in Orchard Hotel, this steamboat concept is run by the same group.

The Food In terms of choices, the eight soup base choices range from conventional to unique flavours. Our table’s top picks are the Shark’s Bone Cartilage Soup with Fresh Bean Curd Sheets and Tomato Soup with Century Egg & Coriander. The former is luscious and goes well with most of the side dishes we ordered such as assorted mushrooms, vegetables and meats. Dinner set menus are priced at $48 and $58, where you can mix and match soup bases with your choice of meats, fresh seafood, handmade meatballs and assorted greens.

The fun part of steamboat is making your own sauce! Go with your gut feeling or if you are feeling clueless, enlist the help of the service staff to customise for you.

Other than a soupy hotpot, the hotpot ‘Gan Guo’, also known as casserole, is also something unique here. This was already cooked so we were able to tuck in immediately. Some of the available options include the Spicy Chicken, Kurobuta Pork Belly and Sea Perch.

Rants We tried most of the soup bases, some didn’t quite work for us like the locally inspired Bak Kut Teh soup base. It was a feeble attempt to add the local flavour as it simply lacked the traditional Bak Kut Teh aroma and essence we are so used to.

Will I Return Again? Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience at Hua Ting Steamboat and we did enjoy some of the soup bases and meats. The a la carte prices are on the higher end so it may not the first place that strike my mind for that hotpot fix.
