Food Review: The Plain Jane at Serangoon Central | Not so plain Swiss rolls in the making
The Place Finding a café in the North-East region of Singapore can be challenging, hence I think The Plain Jane is a good addition to this part of the country. Located right across Serangoon stadium at a neighborhood void deck, I wasn’t expecting any fanciful décor implicit from the name of the café (the owner is unsurprisingly Jane as well). The space is not big but cosy enough to make you feel at home, especially with its vintage furnishings.
The Food There is currently no brunch menu here as the owner is focusing on Swiss rolls, cakes and drinks. The Swiss rolls are the highlights here, with exotic flavours such as Nutella, Yuzu, Matcha, Earl Grey and Thai milk tea. We wanted some light snacks, hence the Iced Latte and Thai milk tea Swiss roll ($5.90). I was surprised by the light texture of the Swiss roll, which had a subdued Thai milk tea flavour. I like the fact that the Thai milk tea wasn’t too in the face, and the sweetness of the Swiss roll is probably controlled since I did not find it overly sweet. I will come back for this.
Rants It is easy to dismiss that it is relatively pricey for $5.90 a roll but for the not-so-plain flavours and selections, this price tag might be more justifiable.
Will I Return Again? The selection on the menu is naturally limited. But if you are simply looking for a spot to enjoy some coffee and pastries, The Plain Jane is not bad a choice in the North-East.
