Food Review: Fish & Chicks at Ang Mo Kio | Fish & Chips with a twist – the Salted Egg Yolk and Chilli Crab way
The Place The salted egg craze has been quite unstoppable, not sparing anywhere be it cafes or coffeeshops. A western food stall in a coffeeshop in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 has been quietly making waves, and we mean big waves. Known as Fish & Chicks (cheeky name I know), it has been opened for a few months, with its best-selling item none other than the Salted Egg Yolk Fish and Chips. The queue can be notoriously bad, and we mean a waiting time of at least an hour.
You first queue to place your order, before a further wait for your food. We visited on a weekend night, and our total waiting time was about 1 hours 15 minutes. By 7.45pm, the staff placed a SOLD OUT board. Go early if you are dying to try it.
The Food There are so many western food stalls within coffeeshops in Singapore, but what is the winning recipe of Fish & Chicks? Other than a successful hype on social media, we can’t neglect the innovation of the dishes to create dishes which are not your usual coffeeshop fares. For first timers, go for the aptly named Best Of Both Worlds ($12.90), which is a lovely combination of the Salted Egg Yolk and Chilli Crab Fish and Chips, along with two sides of your choice. Both versions stay true to its name, drizzled over the crisp fish, and the intensity of both the salted egg and chilli crab was sufficient for me. One gripe is that both the salted egg and chilli crab sauce can be more generous, at least 1/3 of our fish was not drizzled with any sauce.
We decided to be greedy and ordered the Hawaiian Chicken ($7.90). We were drawn to the novelty of the Hawaiian topping (cheese and slices of pineapple) on the otherwise typical grilled chicken. The result? It is nice try to be innovative but if I were to just pick one item to try, go for the fish over the grilled chicken. The fish here is better than the chicks.
Rants Need we rant more? The long waiting time is not for the less patient. By the time my food was ready, I have already gotten over my hunger.
Will I Return Again? Be it if the success is a novelty factor or not, Fish & Chicks will have its steady stream of followers given the affordable pricing in a coffeeshop. While the food is above average than your usual western food stall, the wait is an overkill, not something I will go through again. But if you are in the area and the waiting time is not long, why not give it a try?

I waited for 2hrs at the AMK outlet. I simply could not believe that it takes that long to cook western food. I mean how long does it takes to fried a fish? In comparison, the fish & chips at the reputable Fish & Co takes less than 30mins to serve. Unbelievable.

The wait is definitely too long, that we got to agree. But the business is so good, we are doubtful the wait will get short any time soon though. Fish & Co just launched their take on Salted Egg Fish & Chips too!
