The Place Good Japanese Tonkatsu is hard to come by in Singapore, let to mention be on a par with those we had in Japan as our benchmark has long been stuck at Maisen or Tonki in Tokyo. Still, the search for good Tonkatsu goes on in Singapore and we were glad to have checked out Tonkichi Hokkaido at Orchard Central recently, which is under the Tonkichi brand with various outlets such as Takashimaya and Suntec City.
The setting at Orchard Central is good for casual dining as I like the high ceiling and glass panes which makes the restaurant bright and comfortable.
The Food We initially thought that the menu is purely focused on Tonkatsu, but the menu turns out to be more extensive than we imagined. There are also the options of sushi and sashimi to say the least, even though that really shouldn’t be the main draw to Tonkichi. We started with the Salmon Belly Sashimi (S$17 for 5 slices), a fresh plate with thick cuts of the sashimi.
For something to share, we had the Salmon Daisuki (S$27), which was surprisingly good as our expectations were not high. The salmon was fresh, and I enjoyed the wasabi mayonnaise on the rolls.
That said, the highlight for us is no doubt the Premium Rosu Katsu Set (S$24). The deep fried pork loin here is from Miyazaki, Japan, which was quite tender and juicy. The portion is a 150g, a decent size for one person to enjoy. This set also includes a bowl of chawanmushi and unlimited salad to go along with the Tonkatsu.
Rants It would have been great if the staff explained more about the different sauces and dips available.
Will I Return Again? The food at Tonkichi Hokkaido is definitely above decent for a casual Japanese dining concept. One of the restaurants we will return to at Somerset.
This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
