Food Review: The Glasshouse Specialty Coffee & Toast Bar at Chijmes | All Round Natural Light Cafe in City Hall

The Place We were excited to check out The Glasshouse Specialty Coffee & Toast Bar at Chijmes after seeing pictures of it on social media. Indeed, this semi-permanent café is quite a refresher from other cafes in Singapore. Simple interior, nice natural light and lush interior and exterior, which all adds to its charm. We can’t help comparing it to another standout coffee joint which opened recently in the same vicinity – Kurasu Coffee (read our full review here) located at Odeon Towers.

The Food As of our visit, the café is still pending its food license, though we spotted a toast menu of creamy mushroom, avocado and salmon in the pipeline. There is no kitchen per se, so the food preparation will be kept simple with no fancy cafe food. Strictly speaking, the concept is really more of a coffee bar and toast rather than a full fledged café.

Coffee prices are extremely reasonable, with Black at S$3.50 and White at S$4. A casual chat with the owner reveals that the team holds the belief of bringing artisanal coffee to the masses, hence the competitive pricing.

The Flat White (S$4) we had was very easy to drink, medium-bodied flavour from Comman Man Coffee Roaster beans. Pastries such as croissant and cakes are also available, sourced from local café joint Carpenter and Cook.

Rants It is a small space, and while it’s pretty vibes, it is not that ideal to chill around for long.

Will I Return Again? For its affordably priced artisanal coffee, it’s a yes. This space is ideal for coffee if you are around City Hall and if you don’t mind, being watched by passers-by in The Glasshouse – a very nice space to sip your coffee in, with natural light sipping in all-round.
