Food Review: 888 Mookata at Kovan | 118 Mediacorp Artistes Chew Chor Meng and Dennis Chew huat into Hougang

The Place Located at the far corner of Kovan, just a quick 5-10 minutes walk from the MRT Station, 888 Mookata is the latest edition to the coffeeshop here. You would have seen multiple Instagram posts on this outlet, gaining instant popularity due to its celebrity owners – Chor Chow Meng and Dennis Chew. Long-time Mediacorp artistes, both were most recently seen acting in the broadcaster’s early evening Mandarin drama serial on Channel 8, Yeo Huat Huat; or more commonly known as 118 (要要發). Occupying a large part of the coffee-shop, you will be quickly led to any available tables or if packed, a snaking queue will start forming at the front of the store.

The Food You get to choose from the two available sets for 2 and 4 pax, at a very affordable price of S$26 and S$45. You can add more to your meal here by selecting from the a la carte menu, with prices starting from S$1.80. There are some specialised platters, including the Meat Platter (S$10.80) and Mushroom Platter (S$6.80).

W visited 888 Mookata in a group of 3, and all we ordered was the Platter Set for 2 pax (S$26). We headed off to order to some bites from the other stores at the coffee-shop, and we strongly recommend you to get the satay here. Unfortunately, I am unable to recall the name of the satay store, but you wouldn’t regret getting it.

The platter set includes marinated Chicken Thigh, Pork Collar and Pork Belly, seafood selections (de-shelled Tiger Prawns, Half Shell Scallop, Mussels, Fish Ball, Thai Fishcake and Crabstick), vegetable options (Chinese Cabbage, Xiao Bai Cai, Golden Mushroom and Sweet Corn) and the Thai Instant Noodles. The Platter Set for 4 Pax (S$45) gets you more of each item listed above, with Oyster Mushroom, Tang Hoon and Eggs added to the mix.

Not the most premium of ingredients, but definitely some of the fresher ones I have seen across mookata stores in Singapore. Quick service, and you are likely to sweat a little while enjoying the mookata, but not too much to make you feel uncomfortable.

Rants You do not get the premium selections here, it is at the heartlands anyway.

Will I Return Again? Definitely a meal best enjoyed with a group of friends or family. Fuss-free setup, fresh ingredients and quick service, plus the chance to spot some celebrities amongst the diners, 888 Mookata does it a notch better than its other competitors.
