Food Review: Famous Pao Fan At Jalan Sultan | Affordable Pao Fan From S$4.50 By Local Actor Chew Chor Meng

The Place Pao Fan is the latest food craze these days and Famous Pao Fan (一泡而红) in Sultan Plaza is a new entrant to the Pao Fan scene. Located in a food court, Famous Pao Fan is by local celebrity actor Chew Chor Meng who also runs the popular 888 Mookata. In terms of seating capacity, it was relatively easy to find a table even as I visited on a Sunday morning, with both indoor and outdoor tables available.

The Food There are a couple of Pao Fan options on the menu where prices start from an affordable S$4.50 for the Lala Paofan. The most luxe option is undoubtedly the Lobster Pao Fan (S$16) which was sold out during my visit. For sides, expect the likes of Spam Fries (S$3) and Fried Tofu ($S$3).

Instead, I went for both the Fried Red Grouper with Lala Pao Fan (S$8), and the Fresh Prawn With Sliced Fish Pao Fan (S$6).

For all the Pao Fan, crispy fried egg and the crispy rice puffs are added, which are my favourite ingredients in the bowl! As for the seafood broth, it is prepared with pork bones and prawn heads.

For S$6, the Fresh Prawn With Sliced Fish Pao Fan is a generous portion served. It comes with a few prawns, and a decent portion of the fresh sliced fish. The flavour of the broth here is light yet tasty, and I can definitely do with more of the crispy rice puffs as I like the crunchy and contrasting texture with the rest of the normal rice.

Go for the Fried Red Grouper with Lala Pao Fan if you are in for fried fish, just mind the bones.

Rants Be prepared for a queue during peak meal timings, even as I thought that the location of this food court is quite offbeat.

Will I Return Again? There used to be a time where Pao Fan is only served in premium Chinese restaurants and the Pao Fan trend in hawker stalls over the past six months is a welcoming treat for all Pao Fan lovers. Drop by Famous Pao Fan if you are in the vicinity.
