Food Review: Kok Kee Wanton Mee (国记云吞面) at Jurong West 505 Market & Food Centre | How does it match up to the now defunct Lavender stall?

The Place Ever since Kok Kee Wanton Noodles at Foch Road in Lavender closed abruptly last year, we were at a loss as it has always been our go to place for wanton mee. We finally made it to Jurong West Blk 505 Market & Food Centre after learning that there is a Wanton Mee stall there which bears the same name. We asked one of the staff while queuing and verified that the Jurong West stall is run by the same family (Niece to be specific) as the elderly couple from Kok Kee in Lavender, though both stalls run independently.

The Food The Wanton Noodles start from S$3, and I must say the noodles portion is quite generous. Unlike the Lavender outlet, there is no fried wanton served here. The noodles texture is quite springy, and it does have the old-school flavour which was reminiscent of the Lavender outlet as I remembered it to be. The other ingredients are quite insignificant as I enjoyed the noodles most.

There are thin slices of char siew served along with the noodles, as well as a bowl of wanton dumplings. My gripe is that the wanton dumpling is really miniscule.

Rants It’s challenging to find a seat in this popular food centre and as expected, you have to embrace the queue at this stall.

Will I Return Again? The wanton noodles does have the old school flavour and reminded me a little of the old Kok Kee Wanton Mee  back in Lavender. That said, for someone staying at the other end of Singapore, I will probably not head down to Jurong West specially for it. It is not bad, but somehow lacks the strong character and flavours of the Lavender stall previously managed by an elderly couple.
