Food Review: Koh Grill & Sushi Bar at Wisma Atria, Orchard | The Most Shiok Japanese Maki in Singapore!

The Place This is probably the most popular Japanese casual restaurant in Orchard Road. Koh Grill & Sushi Bar has been around at Wisma Atria Shopping Centre right beside Food Republic for many years. Spotting a snaking queue is not uncommon, especially when the space of the restaurant is not huge. I was excited to return to try the Shiok Maki, especially when my last visit was a few years ago.

If you come in smaller groups, go for the counter seats which offers a good view of the action in the kitchen.

The Food For a Japanese restaurant, the menu at Koh Grill is really extensive. There is a wide selection of sushi, sashimi, rice bowls and skewers. However, if it is your first time here, my take is to save space for the sushi, which is the specialisation of Koh Grill.

If you only have space for one dish, this is it. The Shiok!!! Maki ($16.80) is the most famous dish on the menu and the single item which propelled Koh Grill & Sushi Bar to huge success. This charcoal grilled eel is wrapped with lightly roasted salmon and drizzled generously with sauce. I would say the sauce is the best part! There is some element of mentaiko flavour in the sauce, and in any case, you can expect a very rich taste that I feel is well-suited for the Singaporean palate.

I also ordered the Beef Rice Bowl (S$18), which is surprisingly decent. The portion is pretty generous too, where the tender pan-grilled beef is served along with soft poached egg.

Other dishes I had were the Sake Aburi Sushi (S$4.20/2 pieces) and Sake Belly Sashimi (S$15). Expect fresh slices of sashimi, and good seared salmon rolls here.

Rants The queue at meal hours are overwhelming. I recommend calling ahead of your visit to reserve.

Will I Return Again? This is easily one of my favourite casual dining spot in Orchard Road for me. Every visit has been satisfying for me, and hopefully my next visit would not be a few years down the road.
