Food Review: Rong Ji Seafood (荣记煮炒) at Northstar Ang Mo Kio | Value-for-Money Zi Char Restaurant & To-die-for Claypot Fish Head Soup

The Place Located at Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2 vicinity, Rong Ji Seafood is within the Sin Hin Food Place at Northstar@AMK. Operating daily from 3pm, this rather unassuming local zi char store gets very busy during their evening dinner service. Despite it being a rather huge coffee shop, expect the whole space to be packed during your visit, and surprisingly during my visit, all the other stores in the coffee shop are closed – except Rong Ji Seafood, of course.

The Food The speciality according to the staff here are their crab dishes, particularly their Crab Bee Hoon Soup. Since I was not in the mood of having crabs, I decided to go for their Claypot Fish Head Soup (S$38 for half), which turned out to be very delightful. The intense seafood broth goes perfectly with the thick bee hoon, and the fresh fish makes the dish a very satisfying order. We definitely underestimated the size of the dish, as the serving portion can serve up to 4-6 pax if you are intending to order other dishes here too.

Another raved item on the menu is the Salted Egg Prawns (S$15). The creamy salted egg sauce is luscious, yet not overly cloying. Do not hesitate to scoop the salted egg sauce to go simply with your rice – perfect! Once again, the seafood at Rong Ji is fresh.

Unfortunately, the Prawn Paste Chicken was sold out when I was ordering, which I understood is a popular item at Rong Ji. The staff recommended me the Roast Chicken (S$12 for half), which was very underwhelming. Strongly recommend you to skip this item.

Other side dishes I had include the Sambal Kang Kong (S$8) and Fu Rong Omelette (S$5). Well-executed dishes, and despite over-ordering for dinner, managed to finish both the items here. The Kang Kong has the right balance of spices and dried shrimp, with a generous portion of the omelette despite the reasonable pricing.

Rants As with most feedback I read online, the service here is very lacking. Do expect impatient staff.

Will I Return Again? Surprised it took me this long to discover this zi char store despite its popularity. Glad I have found it now, and am keen to head back to try more of their other signature items including their crab and crayfish dishes.
