The Place The closure of Ronin cafe shocked the cafe scene and being of those which grew up with me, I felt that was a pity such a strong brand has closed. Meet Gather located at Raffles Hotel, managed by the same team behind the now-defunct Ronin. Opened for slightly over a month, Gather specialises in French crepes with a space nothing like Ronin, including a small fashion boutique corner.
The cafe is bright, and you can see an open kitchen as you walked through to your table. Furnished with marble table top, there is also an unspoken colonial vibe to the cafe given the heritage hotel it is now housed in.
The Food Choose from 6 types of galettes, 3 types of sweet crepes and some bakes and sandwiches on the menu.
I went for the signature Off The Bone (S$16) galette which is delicious. Ham, gruyere and egg combination can’t go wrong, coupled with the crisp texture of the galette.
For coffee, I had the White (S$6/8 oz) which comes with double shots. Nice robust flavour here, and the taste of the coffee is smooth as well. Sidetrack to the design of the cup which caught my attention too.
Rants The downside of Gather is the acoustic of the place itself, which ironically is not a very ideal place to gather for long. It’s almost full house and you definitely have to up your voice a few notches of decibels to remain audible.
Will I Return Again? Gather certainly is a good addition to Raffles Hotel as the casual cafe brand helps bring the luxurious hotel brand closer to the hearts of more people. Food and coffee is good, though I can’t say that I can hear myself very clearly inside.
