Food Review: Gazette At Telok Ayer Street | A Taste Of Belgian Cuisine In The CBD

The Place Belgium food is not something which typically comes to my mind when it comes to European cuisine and Gazette was one random dinner option recently. Located at Telok Ayer Street, the Belgium restaurant is right beside Meatsmith, with a simple interior which feels more like a gastrobar than a restaurant proper.

The Food The menu at Gazette is quite concise and offers mainly starters, mains and desserts. It is hard for me to define what exactly is Belgium cuisine as I can only think of Belgium fries, waffles and mussels based on my vague impression of Belgium travel days. And if that is the case, the above dishes are all found on the menu at Gazette.

I started with the Homemade Cheese Croquette (S$20/2 pieces), characterised by its fried golden texture and there was a slightly melted cheese texture as I sliced through it. You can’t go wrong with this starter!

Something more adventurous I had would be the Homemade Pork Pate (S$22) served with pickles, onion confit and toast. Think of it as an exotic spread on your toast, somewhat similar in taste to chicken liver parfait.

For mains, the Croque Monsieur (S$20) comes in four slices and this is quite a decent version. Melted cheese, ham and a crispy toast sound like a good combination, though my favourite version of Croque Monsieur so far is the one I had from Atlas Bar.

I also had the Boulettes-Frites (S$24), which is essentially meatballs and Belgium fries. I was expecting a couple of small meatballs here but what was served instead for this dish is two big meatballs. Not much surprise in terms of flavour for this dish, and you are probably better off trying something else.

Rants It does feel more like a casual pub than a restaurant as the interior design is quite bare.

Will I Return Again? There are not many specialised Belgium restaurants around and Gazette at Telok Ayer is worth checking out if you have been curious about Belgium cuisine.
