Food Review: Famous Old Airport Road Lor Mee Xin Mei Xiang Zheng Zong Lor Mee Opens At Balestier

The Place Patrons of Old Airport Road (OAR) Food Centre will definitely know Xin Mei Xiang Zheng Zong Lor Mee, one of the most popular stalls in OAR and perhaps the most famous Lor Mee stall in Singapore. The brand just opened its second outlet in Balestier Road as a contemporary looking restaurant, a stark contrast from its OG stall.

There are indoor and outdoor seats at the Balestier oiler and it is a self-service system where you get a buzzer after you make your order. In that sense, you can spend time waiting at your table instead of in line for a longer period of time like the OAR stall.

There is a bus stop near the restaurant, otherwise if you drive, park along Jalan Dusun for more carpark lots.

The Food The menu is kept simple for now and it is similar to the offerings at OAR, except that prices are slightly higher. The Xin Mei Xiang Signature Lor Mee comes at Normal (S$6) or Large (S$8), and you can pick your combination of noodles like yellow noodles, flat rice noodles (kway teow) or rice vermicelli (bee hoon). Add ons are also available like extra fish, pork or braised egg.

I have not had the Lor Mee at its OAR stall for many years due to the incessant queue, and am happy to finally have it again. You get a luscious thick broth for the Xin Mei Xiang Signature Lor Mee, complete with ingredients like fish, pork slices, braised egg, and condiments essential to Lor Mee such as garlic, chilli and vinegar.

The best way to enjoy the dish is to mix it all up, and for someone like me who has an average spiciness threshold, the chilli here is not too spicy and you can safely mix it well for a better flavour.

Other than the braised broth, the ingredients like fish and pork are delicious too.

Rants Probably good to introduce other side dishes in future, which completes the restaurant dining experience better.

Will I Return Again? A great alternative to the OAR stall where the waiting time is considerably shorter. Prices are slightly higher for this casual restaurant as compared to the hawker stall, with a pleasant air-conditioned dining environment which I am not complaining.
