Food Review: Jypsy At One Fullerton | Gorgeous And Contemporary Japanese Restaurant By PSGourmet Group

The Place A new beautiful restaurant opened at One Fullerton, Jypsy. Previously located at Martin Road, the new space of Jypsy has an outdoor terrace area which overlooks the Marina Bay. Moving indoors, it is a spacious and beautiful combination of wood furnishing and hand-stained fabrics, along with neutral tones and hues of indigo.

The outdoor alfresco setting is gorgeous. Great spot to people watch where the Marina Bay area gets quite busy with people in the evening.

The Food The cuisine at Jypsy is a contemporary take on traditional Japanese cuisine, with a diverse menu. I started with some of the iconic dishes such as the Jypsy Salmon Tacos (S$16) and Nest of Fries. I love the Nest of Fries (S$14)! You get a thick web of fries in an Instagrammable nest, an addictive snack to binge on as it goes well with the wasabi mayo and teriyaki balsamic sauce.

The cocktail and drinks list is quite comprehensive too, which is great for post-work drinks if you work in the CBD.

For sushi rolls, I had the Torched Wagyu Crispy Nigiri (S$21) with foie gras and black truffle sauce. Each roll is relatively huge, where you get a thick slab of the beef on the rice. It is quite flavourful on its own even without any soy sauce.

I also had the Aburi Salmon Belly Roll (S$20) with toched salmon belly, jalapeño mayo and ikura. This has a slight tinge of spicy notes from the jalapeño, and you really can’t go wrong with fresh salmon belly.

For something light, go for the Snapper, Salmon, Scallop Sashimi (S$26) with fresh lime ponzu. Three types of thinly sliced fresh sashimi, which is a good starter to have before the big plates and cooked items.

For big plates, I had the Wagyu Beef Dripping Fried Rice (S$26), a new addition to the menu. You get slices of beef topped on the rice, where the portion is good to share for two. That said, the fried rice could have been more flavourful and fragrant for me.

For dessert, I went for the Jypsy Custard Pie (S$12) served with Hokkaido Milk Ice Cream, which is pretty good. I love the fresh milk ice cream taste.

Rants Overall, some hits and misses on the menu for me.

Will I Return Again? For its prime location in town, the prices of the dishes at Jypsy are quite accessible. It is a causal Japanese restaurant, so head here for a causal feast with friends or family. It is also probably the perfect spot to host your overseas friends too.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
