The Hotel Located in downtown Zagreb, Canopy by Hilton Zagreb City Centre is a mid-range hotel I stayed towards the last leg of my Croatia trip. The hotel lobby was quite busy during my check-in, and I like the contemporary interior of the lobby. I was handling two big luggage bags myself at one point, and no staff bothered to assist me with my bags. What a welcome.

Anyhow, my check-in wasn’t the most pleasant as well. I enquired with the staff about the Hilton Honours breakfast and program specific questions, but the staff seem clueless about the program. It was my first Canopy by Hilton stay so the first impression was quite bad for me.

The Room I checked in to the King Premium Room which is quite decently sized at 269 square feet. I like the contemporary design of the room which makes it look rather new. The wardrobe is open concept, and there is also complimentary WiFi, in-room Espresso machine and a 49 Inch HDTV.

The bathroom is not too small, keeping a simple white walls and black floor tiles classic combination. It comes with Apivita bath amenities, just fyi.

Overall, I don’t have much complaints about the room itself as it is quite cosy in its own way.

The Restaurants There is only one dining concept on site, Canopy Central Café and Bar. This is also where breakfast is served. The breakfast spread is decent, and you get your scrambled eggs, coffee, mushrooms along with pastry and bread selections. I had a pleasant breakfast on my first day.

However, the second day of breakfast was far from pleasant. There was a big tour group before 8am, and there is practically no food left (can you imagine a breakfast counter which runs out of eggs and croissant). The worst part is the nonchalance attitude of the staff who were reluctant to replenish the food from the kitchen, and it was pretty obvious to me that it was a deliberate attempt. I raised a feedback to someone who seemed like the manager, but there was not much damage control. One word, disappointing service from Hilton.

The Facilities Being a small hotel, the only facility I used was the 24-hour fitness centre. It is really just a windowless room with decent gym equipment.

Otherwise, there is also complimentary Canopy Bikes where you can cycle to the Upper Town area to explore.

Rants Service standards really drag down the otherwise decent property.

Overall Experience I wouldn’t recommend this hotel though it is relatively value for money if you are Hilton Honours Gold or Diamond for the complimentary breakfast. Otherwise, there really isn’t much facilities to speak of, and the service in general is a letdown.
