Food Review: Supperman Speakeasy & Grill At Joo Chiat | Casual Dining Concept In Katong By Awfully Chocolate and Sinpopo Team

The Place From the brand owners of Awfully Chocolate and Sinpopo Brand, Supperman Speakeasy & Grill is a newly opened restaurant in Katong/Joo Chiat which took over the space of what used to be Sinpopo. The casual dining space has a semi-air-conditioned dining area, as well as more indoor seats in a separate dining section towards the back of the space.

The Food The menu focuses on grills, and is quite concise in terms of the starters, mains and side dishes. I started with the Supperman’s Great Start (S$15) which comes with charcoal grilled focaccia baked in-house, where it is served with beef butter and paired with a tasting portion of house wine. The fresh focaccia is quite good, though the wine portion (as its name suggests, tasting portion) could have been half glass at least.

For meats, there are different cuts of premium Black Angus and aged Argentinian steak, all finished on a high-flame grill. Expect the likes of The Tomahawk (S$118), Whole Rib (S$48), Black Angus Ribeye Steak (S$38) and seafood selections such as Blackened Seabass ($22) with crisp skin and Open-fire Crayfish (S$32).

I tried the Black Angus Ribeye Steak 300g, 100-Day Grain-Fed (S$38) with Anchovy Butter. The Argentine steak is quite flavourful and relatively tender. Portion wise, good to share for two persons.

The Open-fire Crayfish (S$32) is an option for seafood lovers if you are looking for something relatively lighter. Not too much of a surprise for me here in terms of presentation or flavour profile, this is a decent crayfish dish.

For sides, go for the crispy Beef Fat Smashed Potatoes (S$14) with garlic butter, or the Grilled Asparagus (S$16) with smoked gouda cheese.

Rants The name Supperman is counter-intuitive to its opening hours since most people have the perception that supper means late night meals. There is also not much of a distinct “speakeasy” element for me at least.

Will I Return Again? There is no lack of dining options in Joo Chiat and Supperman Speakeasy & Grill is one casual option to consider if you are looking to have grilled meats or dishes. Nothing too complicated on the menu, though I feel that the restuarant needs to create a stronger identity amidst the stiff dining competition in Katong.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
