Food Review: Yat Lok Restaurant (一樂燒鵝) At Central, Hong Kong | One Michelin Star Cantonese Restaurant Famous For Roast Goose

The Place Located in Central, Hong Kong, I checked out the One Michelin Star Yat Lok Restaurant (一樂燒鵝) which is famous for its roast goose meat. Yat Lok Restaurant has been around since 1957 and its current location is a small, casual space where you can expect to rub shoulders and share tables with other diners.

Due to its Michelin accolade and roast goose being a popular Hong Kong dish, expect to spot a queue which should clear fairly quickly. Otherwise, the pro tip is to head to the restaurant five to ten minutes ahead of its opening hour.  Be expected to share tables with other diners as well.

It has been a few years since I last visited Hong Kong and one of the most convenient ways to get from Hong Kong International Airport to the city is via the Hong Kong Airport Express Train which I purchased via Klook for ease of convenience and to save time at the airport upon arrival.

The Food The good thing is that there is an English menu if you could not read Mandarin.

Other than the roast goose, the other meats like Char Siu Pork and Roast Pork Belly are also famous. Once you have decided on what meats to have, you can then choose to have it as is, or along with white rice, dry noodles or ‘lai fun’ (white rice) noodles. There are more than a dozen permutation of meat/carbs you could order.

I had the BBQ Pork and Roasted Goose Drumstick with Dry Noodle (HKD 168) which is fairly pricey due to the drumstick part of the goose. Should you decide to have the BBQ Pork and Roasted Goose with Dry Noodle instead, that is just half the price at HKD 84!

I went straight for the roast goose skin, and I was satisfied by the fact that the glistening skin was really crispy and delicious. According to the Michelin Guide Hong Kong, the roast goose goes through over 20 preparatory steps before being chargrilled to perfection. That said, roast goose meat itself does taste quite similar to roast duck meat for me.

The BBQ Pork, or Char Siew here is good, but not exceptional for me. I would have preferred my Char Siew to be more tender, though I did enjoy bits of the edges of the pork here which is the most flavorful part for me.

While the ‘Lai Fun’ soup noodles is the famous carb with the meats, I had dry noodles as I do not really fancy the idea of my roast goose being soaked in soup. The dry noodles I had were delicious though.

Rants Not the friendliest of all service but hey, that is part of the authentic Hong Kong experience. Also, payment by cash only.

Will I Return Again? Head to Yat Lok for the good roast goose meat where the crispy skin is the best part for me. The centralised location in Central, Hong Kong also makes it an accessible option for tourists to check out. Portion wise, the menu also caters to solo diners or small groups.
