Food Review: Blackgoat At Jalan Batu Market & Food Centre | Muslim-Friendly Western Food In Mountbatten

The Place Located at a corner hawker stall of Jalan Batu Market & Food Centre is Blackgoat, a few months old Muslim-friendly Western Food stall by a young ex-chef of Restaurant Zen and Burnt Ends. Jalan Batu Market & Food Centre is not a huge hawker centre and Blackgoat injects a new lease of life to this food centre come evenings since it has opened in this part of Mountbatten. The most distinctive part of the stall is the charcoal grill where the meats are grilled over.

The Food In terms of the menu, it is a rotating menu though you can pretty much expect the likes of grilled meats and burgers.

I was deciding between the beef or chicken burger and went ahead with the White Pepper Fried Chicken Burger Chipotle (S$14). Expect a juicy fried chicken texture along with delicious house-made chipotle sauce, the buttermilk-battered crust of the chicken is the best bit for me.

The brioche bun here is soft, and it also comes with shredded lettuce and fries.

The Tartare of Aburi Tenderloin, Soy Cured Egg Yolk, Bread Crumbs (S$11.50) is good to share as well, where the flavours here are extremely heavy. I do find the marination of the beef too heavy for my liking, though the presentation is quite on point where the egg yolk and crispy bread crumbs add extra brownie points to the dish.

I also tried the Black Angus Sirloin (200g) with Black Garlic ($23.50) which spots a good charred texture along with shredded lettuce and fries.

Rants The prices are on the higher end by hawker centre standards. It would also be great if the staff could offer some recommendations on what to order for first timers like me. Instead, I was merely pointed out to what was on the menu that day. Okay.

Will I Return Again? It is nice to see modern concepts by young hawkers such as Blackgoat in our hawker centres. I like the whole charcoal grill concept and it is also great that the team changes its dishes from time to time so that repeated customers get to try something different each time. For myself, I would love to give the cheeseburger a try next.
