Food Review: Bao Er Cafe At Balestier Plaza | Hidden Gem In Balestier For Delicious Kaya Toast

The Place Balestier Plaza is sizzling hot the past month all thanks to Bao Er Cafe, a casual eatery in the sleepy complex which garnered huge social media attention lately after its story broke out on 8days. The name Bao Er is in fact the name of the wife of founder Jeremy, where the space is a no-frills set up like an old school coffeeshop, except that you get to enjoy air-conditioning here thankfully.

The Food While Kaya Toast is the most well-known item at Bao Er for now, the casual cafe also sells quite a diverse range of food, from the famous Fried Hokkien Mee to Har Cheong Gai, and even Aglio Olio.

It was packed when I visited during a weekday morning, where the cafe was already full. I decided to order the Kaya Toast (S$2) as takeaway, and it was a nice sight to see how the staff prepared each set of toast.

One highlight of the Kaya toast is that the Kaya is freshly prepared daily, and I could appreciate why after having my first bite. While the toast was not that crispy after I had it at home, the flavour of the toast itself was still very good as the Kaya had a strong aromatic flavour on its own.

I definitely love and would not stinge on having butter, so this toast works well for me as the butter slab is equally as generous as the Kaya.

My only regret was not having the toast at the cafe itself. Next time, I shall!

Rants Expect a long waiting time in the next few weeks at least due to its soaring popularity on social media.

Will I Return Again? I would definitely want to have the Kaya toast freshly prepared on the spot the next time I visit Bao Er.
