Food Review: So Do Fun (蜀都丰) At Guoco Midtown | Award Winning Sichuan Restaurant From China Opens In Singapore

The Place There are many Chinese restaurants from China which opened in Singapore in the past one year and the latest to add to our dining scene is So Do Fun (蜀都丰) located at Guoco Midtown in Bugis. So Do Fun is an award-winning restaurant specialising in authentic Sichuan cuisine dishes with over 100 directly operated restaurants nationwide in China and is known for their Key Signature Dish “Boiled Live Fish” 水煮鱼 amongst other classic Sichuan dishes over the last 17 years.

So Do Fun Singapore is located at the conserved building of Guoco Midtown facing Beach Road, where the interior is spacious and casual.

The Food The menu is extensive to say the least, with familiar Sichuan dishes at relatively wallet-friendly prices.

The signature dish is the Boiled Live Fish (S$42.90 or $52.90) which comes in three distinctive flavours (Chilli Pepper / Peppercorn / Sauerkraut), where I had the Sauerkraut (酸菜) version. I love the tender fish meat where the broth is flavourful and not too spicy for the Sauerkraut (酸菜) I had.

The Marbled Beef Mapo Tofu (S$22.90) is another signature dish which is great to go with rice. You get tender marbled beef with the classic flavours of Mapo Tofu with the minced snowflake beef. We had the House Special Fried Rice (S$11.90) to go with our dishes.

That said, one of my favourite dishes is the Grilled Prawns with Vermicelli and Minced Garlic (S$21.90). Served in a wok, the fresh prawns are grilled and set with a timer, and you get an aromatic flavour at the end of it.

The best part for me though, is the flavorful vermicelli noodles and aromatic minced garlic.

For soup, the Pickled Radish Stewed Duck Soup (S$19.90) is good for 3-4 pax to share and is a comforting broth of soup.

For a snack to share, go for our top pick – the crispy Sichuan Farmhouse Crispy Pork (S$11.90), so addictive!

Alternatively, there are other side dishes like Kung Pao Chicken (S$19.90), Shrimp Balls in Spicy Fragrant Sauce (S$18.90) and Brown Sugar Lava Rice Cake (S$5.90).

Rants Desserts are not the forte here, can skip.

Will I Return Again? If you are looking for a casual Chinese restaurant to check out in Bugis at wallet-friendly prices, So Do Fun is worth a try. It is best to head here with a group of people as the dishes are best enjoyed communal style since each dish is quite rich.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
