Food Review: Bouillon Gavroche At Mandarin Gallery | Asia’s First Traditional Parisian Bouillon

The Place Located at Mandarin Gallery, Bouillon Gavroche is a new casual French restaurant located in the heart of Orchard Road which opened this month, also the sister concept of Brasserie Gavroche. Run by French father and son duo, it is a huge restaurant space which spots a French themed interior – think red banquettes, a spacious main dining hall and a secondary dining area which can be enclosed as a private event space.

The Food It is a straightforward menu split into appetisers, main courses and dessert, where the most expensive dish is just S$28. For beverages, expect a pure French wine list where wine by glass or bottles are reasonably priced.

I started with some appetisers like the Oeufs Mimosa (S$6) – hard-boiled eggs with herbs and mayonnaise; Camembert Pané (S$14) – Deep Fried Camembert Cheese, Green Salad; and Rillettes de Saumon (S$12) – Salmon Rillettes, Fresh Herbs, Lemon.

The flavours of the appetisers are all quite straightforward and generally hearty. For the prices, the portions are quite generous.

For mains, expect dishes like Beef Bourguignon (S$26), Saumon Ratatouille, Homemade Pork Sausage, and more. The Pièce du Boucher, Sauce Poivre, Frites (S$28) comes with Butcher’s Cut Steak, Peppercorn Sauce and French Fries. The one I had was flank steak, which is lean and not fatty in flavour.

The other mains I tried was Bœuf Bourguignon, Coquillettes (S$26) – Red Wine Braised Beef Stew with Elbow Pasta. Expect a tender beef texture along with a big portion of pasta.

Last but not least, I managed to try their Tarte Fine aux Pommes (S$8) – Thin Apple Tart which you can add on Vanilla Soft Serve (+S$4); and Profiterole (S$10) – Choux Pastry with Vanilla Soft Serve, Hot Chocolate Sauce.

The Profiterole’s size is good for 2 to share, where I like that it is sandwiched with vanilla soft serve.

Rants Only walk-ins and no reservations taken.

Will I Return Again? A very affordable French dining option in Orchard Road, and a huge space in Mandarin Gallery which is quite rare in today’s dining context. Bouillon Gavroche is not fine dining, and you do not need to break the bank to dine in comfort. Portions are good for the prices of the dishes, which is the main draw here.
