Food Review: Scotts Grill At Shaw Centre | Modern European Restaurant, A Gem In Orchard Road

The Place I must confess I only learn about Scotts Grill recently despite it being around for close to two years. A modern grill concept by Les Amis Group, Scotts Grill is located along Scotts Road at Shaw Centre, and it is a modern European dining concept. It is not a fine-dining restaurant per se, as the setting is not so stiff, yet it also does not fall into the casual dining category.

The Food The culinary direction focuses on simple, rustic flavours elevated with a refined touch led by Head Chef Sherwin Poon. The restaurant recently launched ‘’Bloom’’, a new 7-course Degustation Menu ($188++ per person) based on seasonal ingredients where I had their summer menu. Apart from this set menu which is available for lunch and dinner, you can also opt for ala carte dishes.

I had the 7-course Degustation Menu and here is what to expect:

Croque Madame (Sturia Vintage Caviar | Joselito Jamon / Mornay)
For a start, I had the bite-size croque madame topped with caviar and it is full of umami.

Hamachi (Citrus Dressing | Cucumber Diill Sorbet | Blood Orange)
A refreshing course of diced Hamachi is up next where the colours of the plate represent summer quite aptly. I love how each component comes together, especially the cucumber dill sorbet which adds that cold texture to each bite.

Grilled XL Carabinero Prawns (Garlic Nduja Butter Sauce | Toast)
Served with bright citrus dashi jelly, kosho crème fraiche, and shiso paste, I can’t resist a good nduja sauce and other than the prawn, the best part of this course is to dip the crisp toast into the sauce and mop it all off.

French Turbot (Maitake | Champagne Beurre Blanc)
I always love a good turbot and the turbot here is grilled and accompanied by a velvet-smooth vin jaune emulsion and fragrant wild ramson oil. Very good texture and fatty flavour of the turbot which is being showcased.

Jeju Island Abalone (Liver Emulsion | Linguine)
By featuring sliced abalone from Jeju, the fresh abalone here is tossed in rich, umami-laden sauce along with al dente linguine. Finished with a touch of seaweed butter, the presentation looks simple, but the flavours come through and speak for itself.

Roasted Aged Duck (Lavender fus “Au Miel” | Carrot Mousseline | Petite Salade)
The centerpiece of the menu is Chef Sherwin’s signature main: The Roasted Aged Duck Crown. The gorgeous looking duck was presented tableside first, before being sliced and presented on my plate.

Glazed with lavender Jus ‘’Au Miel’’ and served with roasted golden beets and petite salade, this dish embodies Scotts Grill’s ethos of treating premium ingredients with patience and culinary respect and I can see why. While duck is not my favourite meat (I definitely prefer beef) in European cuisine, this duck is really good. The glazed skin is glistening, and it has that crisp bite along with the tender duck meat. The carrot mousseline and accompanying salad balances the richness of the duck well.

Palate Cleanser

Tart Tatin (Rough Puff Pastry | Vanilla Ice Cream)
To conclude the menu, the Tarte Tatin provides a buttery, classic finish. It comes with a meticulously crafted rough puff pastry (made in-house) and topped with signature house made vanilla ice cream. It was a perfect finish to the meal.

Rants The space is quite open in the sense you can see every diner in the main dining room, which might not work well if you prefer a more intimate and private setting.

Will I Return Again? In all aspects, Scotts Grill is a gem. It is quite under the radar in my opinion, where every course I had nailed it. No frivolous presentation or showmanship for the sake of it and the flavours of the ingredients come through naturally in each dish. I also have to add that the service is sincere and warm. Is this restaurant not on Michelin yet?
