Food Review: Taishu Yakiniku Horumon Mokurin | Japanese Retro Grill Vibes In Katong
The Place There is always something new to check out along East Coast Road for me, and Taishu Yakiniku Horumon Mokurin brings something entirely different to the Katong enclave which is traditionally dotted with cafes and local delights. Stepping into the space of this Japanese yakiniku restaurant does remind me of a down-to-earth neighbourhood grill in Japan.

The layout of the space at Taishu Yakiniku Horumon Mokurin is warm and casual, featuring a prominent, bright red dining counter alongside rows of small tables. The dining vibe is nostalgic and packed with retro energy.

A major plus point for solo diners is the row of counter seats equipped with personal individual grills.

The Food While you can find standard yakiniku cuts across Singapore, Mokurin sets itself apart by spotlighting horumon (offal and internal organs), a staple of Japanese soul food culture that is rarely given center stage locally. The menu features over 30 meat cuts prepared and seasoned to order.

If you are dining in a pair or feel overwhelmed by the choices, there is the curated Mokurin Moriawase Assorted BBQ Platter ($50 for 300g of beef and chicken) to sample a cross-section of cuts if you are not in the mood to make tough decisions.
I started with the Loin with Miso & Leek (S$19.80) where the meat is heavily seasoned.

For a more marbled cut, go for the Karubi with Salt (S$18.50) which caramelizes effortlessly on the tabletop grill.

The Garlic Harami (S$18.50) yields a deep and beefy flavor.

Side options include the likes of Assorted Kimchi (S$12.50) which help to cut through the richness of the grilled meats, whereas the Rich Chicken Dandan Noodle (S$18) is a comforting carb addition where the broth is rich.

Rants Prices of the meats are on the higher side; an exhaustive ordering premium cuts will easily push the bill above $100+ per person.
Will I Return Again? Quite an unpretentious spot for Japanese yakiniku in Katong where the focus is mainly on the simple joy of grilling your own meats. The space of Taishu Yakiniku Horumon Mokurin feels like a casual nieghbourhood in Japan and that is an interesting contrast with the vibes of Katong.
