Food Review: Toriei At Cuppage Plaza | Japanese Yakitori Omakase By Skewers Team
The Place Hidden away on Level 4 of Cuppage Plaza, Toriei is a new slick, intimate 10-seater yakitori omakase restaurant by Chef Roy Koh who also runs Skewers a few doors down. As opposed to Skewers which does an ala carte menu in a casual setting, Toriei targets a more premium and upscale dining experience with only an omakase menu. While the word “hidden” seems overused these days, I am happy to use it again since this spot is truly out of sight in one of Orchard Road’s oldest Japanese enclave buildings.

The space is exclusive as there is only a counter-only setup, where diners get up close to all the action right in front of you as the chef works the charcoal grill.

The Food Priced at S$180++, the chicken-centric menu showcases binchotan-grilled cuts like the juicy bonjiri tail and tender soriresu oyster.

Here is what to expect from the omakase menu:
Seasonal Appetisers
For a start, I had Chicken Chawanmushi was served, a delightful version which uses chicken soup and egg instead of usual dashi.

Ten Chicken Skewers
The highlight of the meal undoubtedly are the skewers. Various cuts are showcased and the staff will check with you before the meal if you take innards. I personally do not take innards that much and here are some of the chicken parts to expect:
Chicken Breast

Inner thigh

Cartilage

Skirt

Skin
One of my favourite parts, I love the crisp outer layer and decadent bite underneath.

Oyster
The elusive medallion tucked behind the thigh. Exceptionally tender with a deep, concentrated flavor.

Tail

Knee cartilage

Mushroom
An incredibly juicy and delicious piece of big shroom.

Tsukune
Juicy meatball complemented by a balanced tare glaze.

Four Vegetables Skewers
I appreciate the vegetables skewers portion which helps to balance the meaty skewers.
Corn

Mushroom

Onion

Tofu and tomato

Okra

Donabe
For this course, Chef Roy brought out a pot of chicken porridge which has already been mixed with egg. The porridge course is comforting and especially flavourful.

Dessert
A simple sweet potato monaka ice cream concluded the meal.

If you are not full from the omakase menu, there is always an option to add-on any parts you fancy.
Rants Seating is limited to just 10 counter stools, meaning securing a spot requires forward planning. The pacing can occasionally stretch out depending on how many parties the kitchen is juggling simultaneously over the hot coals.
Will I Return Again? Toriei offers a highly competitive alternative to the steeper S$200+ omakase options in Singapore. It delivers a thoughtful dining experience that does the humble yardbird complete justice. With just ten seats, it also means you can literally have the whole space if your party size is ten.
