Food Review: Marymount Bakehouse At Upper Thomson Road | Second Outlet With An Expanded Sourdough-Centred Menu
The Place If you love your bakes like us, you would probably have learnt that Marymount Bakehouse has opened their newest outlet at Upper Thomson last month. Occupying a corner shophouse space just steps away from Upper Thomson MRT exit on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), this is the bakery café second outlet after their Farrer Park space, and it is a much more spacious outlet with a wider menu as well. The sourdough-focused bakery café is helmed by founder, baker and cook Ian Ferdinand Chong who started out as a home baker.

Other than indoor seats, there is also an outdoor terrace which can be pleasant if the weather is forgiving.

The Food The new outlet features a sourdough-centered menu that includes handmade sourdough pastas, pies, focaccias, loaves and sourdough-crusted proteins along with expanded brunch offerings and seasonal specials.

For a start, I had the refreshing Parma & Burratina Panzanella (S$27) which is a panzanella affair with tomato-watermelon gazpacho confit cherry tomatoes and burratina along with housemade sourdough croutons in 100% extra virgin oil.

I also had their Corn & Crab Chowder Pie (4 Inch – S$20.50) where sweet crab meat is folded into a rich corn chowder filling and baked in a pie shell. It is topped with crab tartare quenelles, smoky bell pepper purée, basil, burnt corn and crispy corn kernels.

Another signature on the menu here is their Nduja Sofrito Seafood Pasta (S$33) where housemade squid ink pasta made with semolina flour is tossed in a sauce of sofrito, red bell peppers and fermented nduja, then finished with a saffron prawn broth prepared from prawn heads, clams and crab. The pasta is served with braised fennel, clams, crab meat and tiger prawns, and it is a hearty dish to complement the rest of the bakes if you are looking for something more substantial.

For something on the sweeter side, the Apple & Rhubarb Custard Pie (4 Inch – S$16.90) is another signature item where the levain pie is filled with housemade custard and rhubarb purée, finished with apple, cinnamon and maple glaze.

For drinks, I had their Long Black (S$5.80) which is served double shot by default.

Rants No reservations are taken which might also mean a considerable waiting time during peak dining hours.
Will I Return Again? It is a competitive landscape for cafes in Upper Thomson and am glad to see that Marymount Bakehouse is a value adding addition to this precinct. A convenient spot to head back for good sourdough bakes for sure.
