Food Review: Gyu Kaku | Classic Japanese Yakiniku restaurant chain

The Place If you ever visit the Gyu Kaku in Japan, you will realise their branches in Singapore is nothing like them. The original branches does not have any high-tech gas burner grill, but stick to the traditional charcoal grill method. Moreover, the Singapore restaurants are way better ventilated, with diners walking out without the over-powering burnt scent. That said, it has also lost much of the original experience a yakiniku meal provides to its diners. The branch tRP visited is in Chijmes, which we understand is currently in the midst of being renovated. Hopefully when it reopens in June 2014, much of the authentic Japanese yakiniku vibe will be brought in! IMG_1432 The Food There are different grades of beef to choose from on the menu and it really boils down to your budget. Also note that the menu at Gyu Kayu’s Novena branch has a slightly different version (i.e. Casual Menu), which tends to be more affordable! On this day, we decided to pamper ourselves a little and go for the Tajima Wagyu Karubi (Short Ribs). IMG_1409 If you can’t decide which cut of the beef to have, you can always have a mixed platter! Just be adventurous and try out all the different cuts! IMG_1427 Retaining the traditional charcoal grill, but with advanced technology to “draw” the char-scent away! IMG_1411 The secret to the success of Gyu Kayu really is in the freshness of their meat and the high temperature of the grill, making the yakiniku style dining an experience you will never forget! IMG_1429 Rants The prices at Gyu Kaku can be on the higher end for Yakiniku options in Singapore. That said, if you can afford it and decide to splurge on a good meal, this is a guaranteed delight!

Will I return again? Whenever my wallet has grown fatter.

  1. Food looks good, but for that kind of price I would want something a little better, and for me you cannot find a better steakhouse in SG than Fat Cow.
