Food Review: Raffles Hotel’s Bar & Billiard Room | Sunday Champagne Brunch, the best yet in Singapore?

Colonial interior

The Place Mention Raffles Hotel and the colonial architecture of one of the most iconic building in Singapore comes to our mind first. The Bar & Billiard Room is a restaurant bar in Raffles Hotel, which is also the oldest existing bar in its original location in Singapore, with its building dating back to as far as 1896. It was our first visit to Bar & Billiard Room for its Sunday Champagne Brunch buffet, and we instantly concluded this must be one of the most beautiful restaurant setting in Singapore. Every corner breathes history, with chandeliers hanging down from the high ceiling and even the floor tiles are replicas of the original.

The Food
Firstly, we need to warn that this Sunday Brunch buffet has one of the most insane spreads. From fresh seafood to live carving stations to French cheeses and desserts, even the food is displayed in classy Victorian fashion. The first room we stepped in has the appetisers, wide array of cheese and desserts, while the main dining room has everything you wished for in a Sunday Brunch.

Seafood with the likes of Irish oysters, lobsters, cold cuts, foie gras terrine, various amuse bouches and traditional carving station where we spotted Australian Grain-Fed Prime Rib and Omaha Beef Tenderloin.

Another probable record is that this buffet has the most live carving stations of all buffets we have tried so far in Singapore. We counted seven while we were there, from Prime Ribs to Duck Breast, to racks of Lamb and Pork Ribs – we implore you to go for the Pork Ribs if you only have space for one!

At the other end of the dining hall, there are live stations which dish out fresh pastas and scrambled egg with sea urchin (“Uni”) and salmon with caviar. In addition, there is another live outdoor station which prepares pan-seared foie gras that is caramelised to a nice texture.

To complete the Sunday Brunch experience, there is the option of having free-flow of Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve Champagne or Billecart Salmon Rosé Champagne included. If not, you get to enjoy the Sunday Brunch with a selection of red and white wines, and other beverages as well.

Rants As with all Sunday Champagne Brunches, our biggest rant has to be the hefty price tag. What can we say, we want it good, but we want it affordable too! And yes, there is not enough signage in the hotel to lead you to the restaurant; if you are lost, just walk towards the hotel lobby, and Bar & Billiard Room is located right beside the lobby.

Will I return again? We have been to many Sunday Champagne Brunches, and we must say the quality of the spreads here at Bar & Billiard Room ranks above all. This might just be the best Sunday Champagne Brunch in Singapore – make very sure you head here once, that is if the price tag hasn’t turned you away yet.
