Food Review: Ellenborough Market Café | Refreshed interior and Peranakan buffet at Swissotel Merchant Court Hotel

The Place After closing for a four months renovation works, Ellenborough Market Café has reopened lately to a fresh new look. For one, it has ditched the previous dated and slightly sleepy ambience for a bolder and contemporary look, while retaining bits of Peranakan heritage around corners. There are three dining zones, a main dining hall in vibrant turquoise, the lilac mezzanine and a Hampton-esque dining room.

The Food It was great for us to see some new stations at the buffet line along with the new look. Some signatures will never fade, such as the such as the signature Ayam Buah Keluak, Babi Pongteh, Stir Fried Slipper Lobster in Black Bean Sauce and Durian Pengat. Other than Peranakan cusiine, you will still get your International buffet mix such as seafood and Japanese sashimi and sushi.

Notable new highlights include the Carving Station where you can indulge in Roast Beef and Leg of Lamb, as well as a ‘La Mian’ live station near the entrance where you can watch how the La Mian Master toss and prepare the fine Braised Pork Belly ‘La Mian’.

We implore you to head for the desserts selection here, with traditional nonya kuehs and the hot desserts such as the Tang Yuan and Peanut Paste. The must try here is the live station for the making of Kueh Dadar, we had too much that night, we decided against counting.

With the new live stations, there’s a certain smell of the smoked lingering in the air. We do recommend these stations be better ventilated, or maybe shifting these stations outdoor.

Will I Return Again? If you like Peranakan food, this is one of the few in Singapore which focus its buffet to catering to this delicacy. With the recent revamped, it has expanded its offerings to include more of the live stations, which frankly adds more dimension to the spread. Definitely a buffet you will enjoy, without having to burn a hole in your wallet.
