Hotel Review: Veranda Chiang Mai The High Resort – MGallery by Sofitel, Thailand | Escape to the tranquillity of Northern Thailand

The Place Located just 20 minutes car ride from Chiang Mai International Airport, Veranda Chiang Mai The High Resort MGallery by Sofitel is located southwest of the city. Situated amidst the forest, the tranquillity of the property provides guests the best escape from the daily hectic lives, yet being in close proximity to the Chiang Mai city.

You will be greeted by a lobby entrance facing the open fields, with the property’s strong focus on keeping the raw industrial design elements and combining it with the use of wood structures and finishing. The consistent theme throughout the resort, coupled with the all-round greeneries, made the resort a very soothing experience for the guests.

The Room With less than a hundred keys, this is a resort for folks seeking some privacy of sorts. All rooms look out to the open fields, so you don’t have to worry about facing any fellow guestrooms. We checked into the Valley Deluxe Scenery room, which is really spacious with two large sliding doors separating the showers from the room proper. A walk-in wardrobe by the entrance of the room, an all-day mattress doubling up as sofa on the side, and a good-sized balcony facing out to the open fields and the wilderness beyond.

Staying true to the overall interior design, the use of darker woods and red-coloured furniture made the room looked more at ease, dropping the industrial tones by a notch. The bath tub in the showers opens up to the room as you push the sliding doors away, giving more space as you soak in the water while looking out to the balcony or perhaps, just the enjoying the drama unfolding on your cable television.

The Facilities Keeping it down to the necessities, being a relatively small property, the main building of the resort consolidates the resort’s key facilities. The rooftop swimming pool gets you an unblock view of the mountains ahead, with guests able to choose to soak in the surroundings at the pool or at the all-day dining and bar, The Higher Room.

Just below the pool is the hotel’s spa facilities; with the spacious fitness centre a floor lower, located at the same level as the children’s play area.

The Restaurants Breakfast is served at The Higher Room, and the concept manages lunch and high tea during the afternoon. The spread and quality of the food was decent during our visit, with the views from the outdoor seats a main highlight for guests.

In the evening, the Thai-restaurant Rabiang Cha Restaurant starts preparing to welcome guests for its dinner-only service. Located at the end of the open field, the seemingly open-air restaurant is actually well-sheltered from a possibly ten-meters tall glass shelter. Frankly, if you didn’t take the effort to lift your head up, you just might not have noticed at all that you are well-covered from any less-than-ideal weather conditions. We had our dinner here, and was impressed by the quality of food. Very affordable, with set menus to select from as well, and you can easily enjoy authentic and very polished Thai cuisine here at inexpensive prices – in a rather gorgeous space too.

The Surrounding Just 20 minutes from the International Airport, and 30 minutes from the old city, you can easily head out through the complimentary daily shuttle service provided by the hotel.

Rants Wouldn’t life be perfect if there is a shelter from the drop-off area to the lobby? We were greeted by some light showers during check-in, and was surprised by the lack of shelter from the entrance of the property to the lobby, and were surprised that no staff was stationed on site to provide any guidance or umbrellas.

Overall Experience We love that the resort has everything that matters for a retreat all sorted out within a relatively small space and despite being a property with less than a hundred rooms. And perhaps because of the latter, we managed to enjoy great service at almost every interaction with the service team here. For its price-point, we felt that Veranda Chiang Mai has delivered well to ensure a very enjoyable stay, though there is definitely still room for improvements.
